People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

One thing I've noticed about barbecue restaurants

The voting ends at 6:00P.M. in our King of the Cue – Eastern Style Barbecue Poll. Thanks for the bounty of ballots. Monday we’ll switch gears and vote for the Best of the West - Lexington style barbecue. Then we’ll move on to another topic.

One thing I’ve noticed about barbecue restaurants is that many of the good ones are less than fancy on the outside. B’s in Greenville is a good example. Patrons absolutely love this place even though the exterior looks more like a barber shop out of Mayberry. Kent Craig wrote a fine review about B’s noting that it doesn’t have a business phone number and when the barbecue runs out for the day the restaurant closes. Valonda Calloway found out the hard way several years ago arriving a little late for lunch.

B’s also has the distinction of being located on B’s Barbecue Road. That’s pretty cool.

How many of you have been to B’s and what were your experiences?

I remember going there as a child and ordering a BBQ sandwich. It was delicious!

I have been there too many times to count. Great food and the people who work there are so down to earth. It is well worth the trip to Greenville just to enjoy this place. As Bill stated, nothing pretty to look at. Funny thing, during the week the place is LOADED with doctors from the nearby hospital and med school. They are always telling everyone to not let them know that they saw them there.

There are no snobs among barbeque aficionados. If you avoid Bs because of what's on the outside, you'll never know what you are missing on the inside.

I think that most of us who love BBQ appreciate the fact that such good food can come out of run down joints operated by nice down to earth people. The more run down a place looks, the better the Q. Think about it: It's a pig that we are talking about....they don't need lipstick and a bonnet....just cook the little critter and eat it...pretty simple.

A lot of places are like that, Bill. For instance I've found that for a lot of Chinese restaurants, the tackier the decor' the better the food.

For Barbeque restaurants, I think that they need to season a while to achieve that really authentic flavor.

They should stay open later so we can get there from Cary for a decent dinner time---about 9 or so is good for me. By then it is usually dark enough to duck in quickly....

Not only is B's nothing to look at, but it's out on the edge of town. Nobody goes down that road on their way to anywhere else. You pretty much have to be going to B's to be passing by there. So if you don't know where it is, don't expect to find it.

Hi Bill, I have been there a few times on the way thur Greenville. The food is great and for you money, you can buy one BQ sandwich...and make two...word of warning...get there at lunch early to avoid the long line outside...

Never been to B's but everyone who has commented makes me want to try it. I will, however, be journeying to Lexington tomorrow evening to eat dinner at Lexington Barbecue!! Yum, Yum!!! Guess you can figure out who I'll be voting for on Monday!

Bill, I lived in Greenville my entire 45 years. I've had the chance to travel around eastern North Carolina often on business. I usually try to find a good local barbecue joint when I'm out and about. B's is good. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. They cook out back over wood. If you want a plate, you'd better get their early as they sell out fast. They also have some of the best slaw I have ever tasted. By the way, DOT is widening Highway 43 in front of B's. They made sure the restaurant would not be disturbed. If you are in Pitt County, we have another good barbeque joint - Pete Jones (aka Skylight Inn) in Ayden. Also real wood, hand chopped barbeque. On some days, Pete's surpasses B's. They use more skin and fat. That crispy skin chopped in is so good. Come on down sometime and I'll treat you to some good barbeque.
