People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Cast your vote for King of Cue – Eastern Style

It’s time to vote for your favorite North Carolina barbecue restaurant. We’ve taken nominations this week. You’ve blogged and emailed more than 75 different nominations in our Best of Carolina competition. I didn’t realize we had so many great pork eateries statewide.

I’m not playing favorites here but I do have some restaurant names that I really like. I’ve never been to Short Sugar’s in Reidsville but I love the name. It made me laugh. Hog Heaven and Boss Hog are two other names that I really like.

Your comments reflect your passion for barbecue. They also say a lot about your knowledge. I appreciate the many suggestions and specific comments on the many side items on the various menus.

I love Lexington barbecue but still I chuckled when I read staggerlee’s comment: “Ketchup goes well with French fries. That’s about it.” Have you heard the ketchup song on Prairie Home Companion? Ketchup is for the good times unless it’s a pig pickin’ in the Coastal Plain.

Speaking of songs I appreciated the tip about The Barbecue Song by Rhett & Link and The Homestead Pickers. That song really sums up the South’s love affair with the barbecue. You can find the video and song on Youtube.

Preferences aside, innocentbystander summed up a lot of our attitudes when he wrote: “I have rarely tasted BBQ that I didn’t like, regardless of style.” And thefensk hit the nail on the head by saying some of the very best barbecue can be found at church, school and VFW fundraisers.

We will have two pork polls beginning with a feast down east. We will crown a King of Cue among restaurants that serve eastern style barbecue. We will have a separate poll on Monday for the Best of the West in our quest to establish the most popular restaurant using a touch of tomato in their vinegar sauce.

The finalists listed in the eastern poll are based on restaurants getting the most nominations via blog and email. Some fine restaurants didn’t make this list but we had to narrow the field. The list was compiled in alphabetical order.

Voting ends at 6:00P.M. Friday

Johnny's in Louisburg is the best nearest me. I am starting to hate the fact that I didn't eat B's when I was in Greenville doing clinical rotation. Wilbur's in Goldsboro was great years back when they served it sliced, I am not so happy with it now that it is chopped.

No Joe's BBQ in the southeastern corner? So delicious!!!

Whiteville NC, you'll see it if you take 701 to Myrtle Beach!!

I voted for Parker' ssince my favorite (Doug Saul's) which is off the beaten path did not make the list.

Parker's in Wilson !

Hog Heaven used to be great but the ownership changed and the amount of vinegar increased. Why isn't Bullock's of Durham on the list? I haven't been there in a while so it may have changed. And, how about Bob'd BBQ just off 85 in Creedmoor?

B's is best in The East, however if you're in down town Raleigh hit up The Pit - its delicous (on a side note you can't really compare these two)

Also not in the list is Lancaster's BBQ in Mooresville, NC. It is Eastern NC BBQ found further west. It's worth the stop if you're in the area. They are closed on Sundays. Be careful not to eat too many hushpuppies and drink too much sweet tea. The restaurant is very unique, even has a school bus in side of it with seating available inside. For more info, go here: http://www.lancastersbbq.com/

The Murphy House in Louisburg didnt make the list either. They have a 60+ year tradition of fine BBQ. They also used to be available in all Winn Dixie stores (before they went belly up). I voted for Johnny's in Louisburg instead, because I know the family. I didnt vote for Smithfield's Chickin & BBQ because I dont care for their "special sauce".

B's in G-ville. Mmmmm!!

I voted for Parker's even though I think their quality has gone downhill over the last couple of years . . . and because my top 2 choices didn't make the list. A man from my hometown makes the absolute best BBQ, followed by Shaw's BBQ in Williamston.

I'm extremely disappointed that Bob Melton's was not included in the poll. Oh yea! there ain't too many on here that remember that far back.

Bullocks shouldn't be misssing!

Gotta be B's in Greenville! I have had most of the others on the list but B's be da bomb! Make sure you go early, sometimes they are out by 1pm and it gets mighty hot standing in line!

As an official "Carolina 'Q' Connoisseur," I can say with utmost authority that B's Barbecue in Greenville is the best I have ever tasted in my entire life. Stephenson's near McGee's Crossroads in Johnston County is so very close. The Skylight Inn (aka Pete Jone's) in Ayden surpasses B's on some day. Pete cooks his with oak wood. He chops it with some skin and fat. If you want to know what barbeque tasted like 150 years ago, try Pete's.

I haven't been to Wilber's in forever but they were certainly my favourite on the list. I thought about it when my mother and I were in Goldsboro picking up her new car a few weeks ago but I figured her constitution wouldn't deal with real down east BBQ. Anywhere a F-15 driver can land, roll out to the end of the runway and get a couple of BBQ slaw sandwiches not too far away is going to get my vote.

When I worked in Cary, I enjoyed Danny's but Eastern they ain't unless you're aiming for eastern Texas.

Best I ever ate though was in Lumber Bridge when old Mr Chason's joint was open. Ever since he died, the family members didn't have his touch for the Q and the place died off right quickly. But anyone in Cumberland or Robeson County knew that place when it was at it's height...and was full-on willing to drive the 45 minutes to the middle of nowhere to go there!

Where is The Pit that's newly opened in Raleigh? Ed Mitchell's barbecue is the best in the state! I love that place!!!

Smithfield is hard to beat. Always tastey

Parker's in Wilson is where I grew up eating BBQ. They are the best and I have eaten at a lot of BBQ joints. They have their off day once in a while as I would think any business does. Anybody claiming perfect is just not telling the truth. They are almost perfect though.

Methinks somebody is stuffing the ballot box...

Bob Melton's on the banks of the Tar River was the best, go up to the counter, order two sandwiches and a coke in the old glass bottle, it didn't get much better than that.

Josh Bulluck's, Overton's and Melton's were 3 great places to eat in Rocky Mount. And then for a special treat, my dad would take the family to Parker's for their family buffet. Except for Parker's, all are now closed save for the memories of those who were fortunate to have enjoyed those BBQ restaurants.

There used to be a post card for sale in Rocky Mount when I was a youth there that advertised Rocky Mount as the Barbeque captial of the world due to the amount of BBQ that was shipped out worldwide every week.

And I agree with Garnerwolf, I think that someone is stuffing the ballot box.

Richard's BBQ in Salisbury is one of the best. It's a small little joint off of Innes Street, going in the direction of Spencer. They have a drive-thru, too. I used to spend lots of time in Salisbury because my Dad is from there and one of my favorite meals was a BBQ sandwich, hush puppies, and an ice cold Cheerwine. Luckily, we didn't get this everyday!!

Why wasn't Bulluck's in Durham included they are one of the best in the area and have been for over 20 years.

Jim

I hear Bullocks is great but it didn't get enough nominations to make the final cut for the poll.

How did White Swan make it while Bullocks *and* The Pit didn't? Wow. Why cut known good places to make room for chains?

Is the poll for just the meat, or do we need to factor in the restaurant's environment, sides, etc?

I lived in and around Raleigh for 13 years and White Swan was by far THE.BEST.BBQ. I've ever had the pleasure of eating. For what it's worth, what's now a chain started out by a family, one who's children I actually went to school with. How did it grow into a chain? Well, by success and popularity of course!

I don't think Bullock's has such great barbeque. It seems dry and tasteless to me; I think their other food is much better. It's hard to beat their country style steak, but the barbeque is not worthy of best in the east.

Any thing west of I 95 should be banned from the list

OK first off, Parker's of Wilson is not connected to Parker's in Greenville. The food is so different and Wilson is better. Second, Doug Sauls is good as well and it is off the beaten path. If you don't know where it is, you wil never find it. LOL

But my favorite has to be Bill Ellis'

I agree with 2thebeach....Bullocks BBQ is not that good at all. It was not good the last two times my family went there and we haven't been back since. Hog Heaven BBQ and Allen and Son have the best........west of I-95, which by the way doesn't have anything to do with eastern or western bbq. You either have good Que or you don't. I think the bbq chains should not be on the list to make room for more independents, not corporate America.

Oh my....what happened to King's in Kinston?

Hog Heaven's bbq puts you in pure heaven. You have to try it at least once. It might be a drive for some folks but I am lucky to work in Durham and able to eat often there. I think the chicken is equal to Smithfield. Hog Heaven does not have brisket which makes us go else where for it but when we want good barbeque, we go to Durham, Hog Heaven.

It's a good thing they put the disclaimer ... "Please keep in mind that our polls are for entertainment and are not conducted in a scientific fashion. We make no guarantees about the accuracy of the results"

There is no way this poll was accurate, as there was some serious ballot stuffing going on. As an NC girl who has eaten her share of bbq all over the state, I was very interested to see if there are some places I have missed out on that I needed to try. I followed this poll the last couple days and noticed every time Hog Heaven started losing some ground, all the sudden they would start getting lots of votes. Literally like maybe 20-30 votes per minute. I noticed it the first day when they were not even in the running suddenly they got ahead by several hundred votes. Noticeable enough that I IM'd to my husband at 4:56 that they had gotten 20 votes in one minute.

Then today at about 11:00am they were ahead by about 300 votes. From 11am to 4pm they only got about 150 votes and by 4pm they had lost the lead by 32 points. About 5-10 minutes later I refreshed the screen to see how it was going and they had gotten 113 votes in less than 10 minutes ! WOW, Hog Heaven must have really really really good barbecue ? So, for curiosity I started refreshing my screen every 2-3 seconds for about 2 minutes. Hmmmm, that's odd ? Every 2-3 seconds they get exactly one more vote ? Unfortunately I couldn't continue watching this amazing saga. I had work to do. I don't know exactly when the "votes" stopped coming in at such an amazing pace. But I do know when I checked after the voting ended that they had gotten 1028 votes between 4:11 to 6:00pm. Wonder where they learned how to vote ?

It would be really cool if we could have another poll with maybe more accurate results.

- Raleigh girl

Wow "abart", for someone who has work to do it sure seems like alot of bashing going on. You must be with the Parker's group because it came down to Parkers and Hog Heaven. Both were having votes pouring in all afternoon. What did you do, write down times to the exact minute and votes while timing how fast they came in? You must have way too much time on your hands to bash one bbq restaurant while the other is receiving just as many votes. If you want to pull the boxing gloves off, we all can jab other bbq joints. Don't be a sore loser or a "Raleigh girl". You should have signed it "Parker's girl"... Btw, you can im your husband about this posting and send more pointless postings about something that was done for fun. Everybody has an opinion and mine is you went way too far out of the way just to bash another bbq joint. Out of 100 plus postings total, you were the only one who had very negative thoughts. Maybe you were in need of a bbq sandwich!

How can you eat that stuff?

Next time in Greenville or Washington give Boss Hog's a shot. They run circles around Parker's (Greenville Parker's).

Smoky Mountain barbecue in West Jefferson: eastern style barbecue made with the best cuts, consistently great quality.

I OBSTAIN! Without Bunn's in Windsor, this is a travesty, I tell you, a TRAVESTY!
