Museum Mania

Posted May 19, 2008

What is your favorite musem?  With gas prices at record highs a lot of you are looking for exciting new adventures close to home.  Raleigh is rich in museums.  Three of my favorites include the state museums for art, history and natural sciences.  They keep their exhibitions fresh and vibrant.

What exhibitions have impressed you lately at various museums?

What is your favorite state musem?

What is your favorite museum anywhere?

Special thanks to Kevin Holland for this blog topic.

The Stanly County Museum in Albemarle, NC is a small museum with 2 historical houses located next door. All of the artifacts in the museum are related to Stanly County; pottery, memorabilia, uniforms, etc.

I love the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. The whole place is "kid friendly" and hands-on. We've taken our second graders several times and they always say it's one of their favorite places. In fact, a lot of parents take their children back at some point!

Our kids like to drive down through Washington and Bath then take the ferry across to Aurora to the fossil museum. It's a nice day trip from Raleigh and the kids love digging for shark teeth. Make sure to stop in Bath on the way and take a walking tour.

I like to go the the Bennett place museum in Durham. And, another good one over there is the Duke Homestead and Tobacco museum. They are pretty close together and make a good outing for out of towners and history buffs.

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is among my favorites. I went a few times while living up there. It's huge and even has a degree-granting fine arts college within - The School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

Another in Boston which I never visited but often gets good reviews is the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. One its main attractions is an outdoors garden that is situated in the middle of the building, so you can only access it from going inside.

I've only visited the NC Museum of Art a few times and glad that they expanding. I love the outdoor sculpture garden and the vast open space in back including the walking trail - a unique thing with this particular museum.

I also attended the Monet exhibit and wear the T-shirt I bought there. I bought a book on Monet while there but have yet to read it.

When I go to DC, I spend the whole day in the Air and Space Museum. Someone once told me the rest of the Smithsonian is good too - guess I'll around to it, someday ;-)
