People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Stoke the Heart

What advice would you like to leave on this blog for the thousands of college graduates who will be turning their tassels this weekend across North Carolina? What inspirational words might resonate with the students getting ready to face the real world of work and life as a responsible adults?

I heard something simple this week that I really liked. It came from Nate James, the new assistant basketball coach at Duke. Asked what his philosophy of coaching will be, Nate said it is the same as it was in college: "Bring it every day." Bring your best effort to everything you do and bring it day in and day out.

I keep a daily collection of quotes and here are some of my favorite inspirational ones:

"Life should be a daring adventure." Helen Keller

"It's never too late to be what you might have been." George Eliot

"Whatever excites you do it. Whatever drains you stop doing it." Derek Sivers

"Anytime you're afraid to do something and you do it, it makes you stronger." Fred Bartlit

What are your favorite slogans to fire the imagination and stoke the heart?

Whenever you try real hard to achieve something, go for it, but don't be surprised if the it you find may not be the something you were after.

Bill, One of my all time favorites is from Eleanor Roosevelt...'No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.' And a piece of advice my mother gave me..."There are lots of negative people in the world. Don't let them get the best of you. Just embrace the people that love you and pray for the ones who don't."

My Father wrote this quote from Shakespeare in my 6th grade autograph book and I will NEVER forget it - and I live it every day . . .

"To thine own self be true . . ."

1) Shoot for the moon. You might not make it, but at least you'll be among the stars.

2) If your ship doesn't come in, swim out to it.

There is no secret to success, it is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure. Quoted from Colin Powell.

My late father frequently made these three statements which have always stayed with me and affected my life.

1) Aim for the stars. You may never reach them, but you will go a lot higher than if you aim along the level ground.

2) Never deprive someone of the right to show you that they love you.

3) Don't wait until the funeral to send flowers.

Remember this..... Usually the least popular decision is the RIGHT DECISION!

Congratulations to all the graduates. One of my favorite quotes is " We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give" by Sir Winston Churchill. I find this statement more meaningful as I grow older.

"Life is a journey... enjoy the ride!" and "Live so that you leave the world better than you found it."

There are a couple I would like to share: 1. - Never regret something that made you smile. 2. - Life is not a race, take is slow, hear the music before the dance is over.
