People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Carolina Tears

Our hearts ache. We have cried a collective river of Carolina tears over the last day. The senseless murder of the UNC Student Body President Eve Carson leaves us all asking the question:  Why should someone so warm, gregarious, intelligent, caring and involved have her life snuffed out at such a young and vibrant age?

I watched Thursday night's candlelight tribute to Eve with my daughter Lauren. I told Lauren about the powerful Carolina bond. It has been many years since I graduated from UNC but last night I felt like a student again experiencing the pain of a terrible loss but also the comfort and pride of a wonderful academic community. The music also took me back to my college days. The UNC Clef Hangers hit a powerful emotional chord with their haunting renditions of classics by James Taylor and Simon & Garfunkel.

During a particularly poignant moment during last night's broadcast WRAL's Debra Morgan's voice cracked with emotion. It reminded me of the time when I had to report the death of another member of the UNC community. Like Eve, Tom Brothers was a Morehead Scholar. We were best of friends growing up in Morganton. Several years after graduating from UNC Tom died in a mountain climbing accident in Idaho. Reporting Tom’s death was the toughest moment in my broadcasting career. I also remember my voice cracking on the air when I had to announce the death of UNC alum and my journalistic hero Charles Kuralt.

My heart goes out to Eve’s family. I know the Carolina community is thinking of them and praying for them. Somehow we will get through this tragic loss together.

If you would like to leave a message for the Carsons here on the Carolina Conversations blog and I will make sure it gets to the family.

It is so difficult to see someone so young and full of promise lose her life in such a tragic and senseless way. As mere mortals, we cannot see the reason or understand the hurt and pain that we and, especially her family, are feeling. I pray that all who mourn her loss will feel God's peace and strength as they struggle through the coming days. This is certainly a sad time.

My prayers go out to Eve's family. Her death is one that is so senseless. My family is NCSU all the way, for sports, but let me tell you, last night we cheered UNC on watching the tribute to Eve. I found myself calling my friends who graduated from there and telling them how sorry I was. You are right Bill...UNC is a tight family.

My prayers are going out to this family of a tragic loss. I have a freshmen at uncg and i just cant' imagine what it would be if it was my son or daughter. I pray that God will give you strength to get thru these next days and weeks May God Bless and keep you.

Prayers to the family and friends of this young lady. Hopefully the person(s) responsible will be brought to justice quickly!

On this day, we are all Tar Heels. The prayers of so many of us at Duke go out to Eve's family and to our friends at UNC.

When we who sing can sing no more/When classmates, too, are gone at last/We'll meet upon that other shore/To sing the praises of the past/Fair Carolina's fame will tell/Wherever men of honor dwell.

My heart goes out to all of Eve's family and friends. I have no ties to Eve or UNC other than I am a fellow human-being. This is such a tragic, senseless thing.

This is terrible, she was such a fine person and I hope they catch those responsible SOON. Eve seemed to be the perfect girl, student and citizen.

Beautiful, soothing words, Celt. Thank you!

I would like to extend, with deepest sympathy, my prayers for the Carson Family and the Tarheel community. I, myself, am a NCSU fan. In tragedies, such as this, we are no longer divided, but shall come together as one. Regards, from the Rose Family.

My heart goes out to this beautiful girls parents and friends. The first thing I did when while watching the vigil was to pick up the phone and call my 3 boys to say I love them. Eve's parents never got that final chance. God Bless the Carson family.
