Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

"People are always asking me where to take vacation. What’s a cool place? What’s the most scenic drive?" WRAL News Anchor Bill Leslie attempts to answer those questions and others in his Carolina Conversations blog.

Best Vacation Ever!

What was your best vacation ever?  Where and why?  Please discuss.  Mine would have to be Scotland.  But for North Carolina it would have to be the first time I went to the beach as a child.  Long Beach.  Wow, that was special!

Speaking of vacation, I'd like to ask you a fun favor.  WRAL has launched a new feature on the weekend morning news. We want to share people's vacation photos of great USA destinations in our newscast.

All you have to do is to go to www.wral.com and type in "getaway" in the keyword search box. You'll have to log in (or create a log in) to upload the photo but it's really easy... and it'll ask you some brief questions such as what you enjoyed about your trip.

People can certainly send their favorite NC destinations too!

Renee Chou came up with this idea and it will be a great addition to the weekend morning news with Renee, Erin Coleman and Mike Moss.

My best vacation was about 4 years ago. I won a contest for a free week in Wilmington. We stayed at the Hilton Riverfront and received tickets to all the historic homes in the area. My husband and I felt like kids. We even did one of the ghost tours and mid way through it started to pour down rain and we got soaked!!! But it was a memory i'll cherish always. It was the most relaxing week- no money worries, no business worries, just he and I in our own little world. Every now and then he asks me when I'm going to win another vacation...

My best vacation ever was last February when I went on a "We're all turning 40" cruise with my friends. Twenty years ago when we were in college we were all sitting outside our dorm. We decided than we we turned 40 we would go on a cruise together. You know that 40 was soooo far away then.

Twelve of us went for a week to Key West and Grand Caymen and it was WONDERFUL. We came together from Raleigh, Chicago, New York, Baltimore, Richmond VA, and Atlanta. No husbands, no children, just the girls. I didn't know what to do when I got home and no longer had my room stewards and chef to prepare my meals!

We were the life of the party. After the first night, the DJ from the club wanted to know what time we would be back the next night! I even went snorkeling with the sting rays at Sting Ray City. It was a really great vacation and I loved being able to hang out with my friends again. I think I got a total of 20 hours sleep the whole week!

Our best vacation was ten years ago in Ireland. We spent a week or so with a rented car and rented a cottage in Killarney. We had a guide book and a map and drove all around the southwest of Ireland, kissed the Blarney stone, stayed up late in pubs listening to the locals play music and visited stone circles. It was great. One of my favorite NC vacations is anytime of year in Asheville.

I, too, am anticipating a great summer vacation. My husband & myself, our 2 sons, my parents, and my brother & his 2 sons are going to Florida to Discovery Cove. This is the first whole family vacation we have taken in about 13 years. This trip was promised by my mother to her 4 grandsons if they would learn all 50 states & capitals. The kids don't know the destination, nor do they know that their cousins are going. So...4 adults w/ 4 kids, ages 13,12,11,&10 for a week in Florida... Fun, Fun, Fun!

My husband and I have a travel fund to which we contribute. Every five years, we are taking a "vacation of a lifetime." Our first trip, in 2005, was a Royal Caribbean cruise in Europe. We left from Harwich, England, went to Paris, Plymouth, England, two stops in Ireland, one in Scotland, three in Norway, including several fjiords, and our last stop was Amsterdam. The cruise was two weeks long and was amazing! In 2010, we hope to cruise Northern Europe including several Scandinavian countries and a couple of stops in Russia.

Every summer at Ocean Isle Beach.

My favorite vacation was my wife and I going to my Ireland our anniversary a few years ago! As a scholar, I love visiting medieval monasteries, perusing old manuscripts at the Royal Irish Academy, and climbing the cliffs of Skellig Michael. But none of that can compare with looking across the breakfast table at the one you love, drinking tea, and planning a magical day exploring the island together.

I'm looking forward to what I anticipate as my best vacation ever. We are going to Branson, MO this July. I can't wait to see the Ozarks and the beautiful country surrounding it and Tablerock Lake. We will be taking in some shows too. Anticipation!!!!

A trip to Lake Tahoe that we took several years ago was a great vacation. We got to ski at several resorts and just take in the beautiful scenery. I'd love to go back!

A trip to Maine my husband and I took when we were engaged would have to be my best vacation. It was in the summer of 2002 and we had such a good time. We choose to drive from our Goldsboro home as to "sight see" along the way. Once we arrived at my family camp in Kenduskaeg Maine (a few miiles east of Bangor) the fun really began. We hiked in Acadia National Park, we ate lobsters from the local lobster pound, watched fire works on the 4th of July in Bar Harbor, tried the local blueberry jams and dandelion wines... It's a vacation I'll never forget.
