Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

This is the Year of Reds

Posted October 22, 2007

It’s not too late to see some brilliant fall colors in the North Carolina mountains.  I spent five days roaming the back roads and I would say this week and weekend might be your best bet.  I encountered a treasure trove  of color last week in spite of the drought.

Please check out my slide show edited by Nathan Clendenin.  It will give you an idea of some of the fine foliage you will enjoy.

My travels included the Blue Ridge Parkway, some back roads in Alleghany and Ashe counties and the South Mountains in Burke County near Morganton.

WRAL colleague John Harris just returned from Roan Mountain near the Tennessee line and he said the colors were spectacular there as well.

What are you hearing and seeing from those glorious Tar Heel hills?

    Beautiful, just Beautiful!

I went on a field trip to Cherokee with a group of Fourth Graders on Friday and the reds were beautiful in Waynesville. I grew up in the upper elevations, but it really took my breath away.

WOW! I assumed (you know what that does) because of the severe drought conditions we are having in the state, the leaves would just die and drop off. Guess it proves Mother Nature can endure any adversity. You go Ma! Unfortunately, I won't get to the mountains until mid-November. Bill, thanks to your eloquent piece I feel like I've been there and will share this experience with others.

Thank you Bill for sharing the mountains and the colors with us. Seeing that old twisted fence that lines the Parkway brings back warm family memories that I will always cherish. I am ready for a weekend trip to Boone or Asheville. :)

I loved the slide show, I'm really glad the colors weren't all drab like I feared they'd be.

Thanks for all of the nice comments on the photos. I used a small camera that fits in my pocket - Kodak EasyShare V550.

We spent this past weekend in Maggie Valley and the mountains were absolutely beautiful - some of the tops looked on fire with all the red trees.

The photos look very similar to the Green Mountains of Vermont in September.

My friend told me this is the year of Orange in the Champlain Valley.
