Best Chili

Posted October 9, 2007

What restaurant makes the best chili?

What is your favorite recipe for chili?

Please weigh in as the temperature gets ready to take a tumble. Have you seen the long range forecast?  We could be shivering this weekend with overnight lows in the thirties.

Bring on the chili to break the chill!

Special thanks to Amy for coming up with this blog topic today!

Shug --- I can (using a pressure canner) fresh tomatoes myself during the summer to use during the winter. They are a lot better than store bought because they are like fresh & don't have all of the preservatives in them. I also forgot to add into my recipe that I do add Chili Powder.

My husband is the cook at our house, but I can actually do a pretty good job with Chili made with Carroll Shelby's Chili Mix. It comes in a little brown 'lunch bag' with all the fixins. Of course we do make some additions on our own, but this is a great mix.

I am very aware the Wendy's incident was false, and quite misfortunate for the comment was a JOKE!!!.....but not the Broome Street comment....seriously, their chili is great!

Being an Ohio native, I have to say I love Skyline Chili. But on a busy weeknight I make cheater chili. Here it is, browned ground beef, one onion chopped, jar of your favorite salsa, one can of black beans. Heat it through and top it with sour cream, shredded cheese, or avocado. It won't win a blue ribbon but it's good with corn chips.

Broome Street Bar in NYC (just off Broadway) has phenomenal chili....but then again, everything I have eaten there has been great!

On a side note, I am glad to see Wendy's did not make this list...(think back to finger incident!) Oy vei!

My chili rocks, but the recipe is a guarded secret. Only Jay Bush's dog knows ;-)

I make my chili pretty much like the ones listed here. I don't follow a standard recipe but use what I have on hand. I do use mostly beef but also have used ground turkey. I like using a little unsweetened chocolate at times as mentioned earlier. This adds a deeper, richer taste. But, I'll bet I add an ingredient that most people don't. Raisins! Try it, you'll like it!

My chilli is browned and drained ground turkey, sliced kielbasa browned a little bit, black beans, pinto beans, great northern beans, large lima beans, diced onion, diced stewed tomatoes and Texas Pete. Cook slowly until the beans are tender. Also, I like a scoop of potato salad dropped in along the side of the bowl.

As for restaurants, I'm not sure. My Son-in-Law used to make great chilli at SportsPage in Knightdale, but he's given up the Chef thing.
