Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

Best Soup & Tour Guide

Posted September 18, 2007

Congratulations to PackManSJP for winning the Essential Carolina contest. Stuart, please send me your address and I will send you a copy of the “Peaceful Journey: A Celebration of North Carolina” CD I recorded several years ago.

I thought your travel suggestions were precise, varied and entertaining. You obviously know the state very well. I personally would have suggested a few more stops in the mountains but perhaps that is my western bias. You did a superb job of packing in a lot of prime Carolina country.

Thanks to everyone for playing along. Each one of you had some terrific ideas.

Okay. Our cooler weather question of the day:

What restaurant serves the best soup in North Carolina?

Serendipity in Cary has the best tomato bisque!

I had a really good bowl of soup that came out of a pot on my mama's stove night before last. That's better than any restaurant I know.

The Clam Chowder and Lobster Bisque at Sripper's in Manteo. What is unique about the clam chowder is that it is what the owner calls "Newport Style" which is milk based, but has a very good flavor that is accented by putting croutons in it. The Lobster Bisque is very good and has a nice spicy bite to it. Best two soups I have ever had.

It is hard to beat the French Onion Soup at the Angus Barn in Raleigh.

I think Yarborough's Homemade Icream at 132 McIver St in Sanford makes the best homemade beef vegetable soup to warm you up during the cold days of fall and winter.

The French Onion soup at the Pisgah Inn. I'm looking forward to a bowl this weekend. As far as chains go, what about the corn/crab chowder at Bonefish? It's great.
