Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

NC Hall of Fame

Who belongs in the North Carolina Hall of Fame?  I can think of a dozen names right off the top of my head. Who is on your list?

But wait a minute. We don't have a NC Hall of Fame. Why don't we?  Good question.

I started thinking about this today as I prepared for tonight's third annual Raleigh Hall of Fame induction ceremony which should generate another a sell out crowd at Meymandi Hall in the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts. The Raleigh folks have really got their act together with strong leadership, a clear vision and a big-time annual induction program.

Robert Poole would like to get the ball rolling on a state hall of fame. The Louisburg College Auditorium and Concerts Manager has been pursuing this dream for several years. Robert has met with former UNC President Bill Friday and State Representative Lucy Allen and others about his idea. He would like to form an advisory committee and raise money to get the idea off the ground. I wish Robert all the best. Maybe you have some thoughts on how he can get his dream to fly.

For now there is a NC Sports Hall of Fame, a NC Auto Racing Hall of Fame, a NC Literary Hall of Fame but no North Carolina Hall of Fame. How strange.

I would nominate Maj. Gen. William C. Lee, founder of the 82nd and 101st Airborne. Born in Dunn, NC.

The Nature Boy is not from North Carolina. I would think we could add Jim Graham to that list.

Bill Leslie--we should get a North Carolina Hall of Fame, and you should be one of the first honored--for your compostion of music showing what a great place North Carolina is. You are to North Carolina in music, what Edvard Grieg was to Norway, or Sibelius to Finland.

Well, Mr. Poole and his advisory committee could probably hook up with the Department of Cultural Resources, the state agency best equipped to handle such an undertaking. Being from Louisburg, I wish him all the best. I wish I had time to volunteer to his project.

Well, pulling from the "NC Characters" list I would add Rick Dees. Also Ken Lowe (he was Steve Roddy on WKIX) and is the founder of HGTV.
