Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

Back from Boone

Posted August 20, 2007

Thanks for all of your nice comments last week on the Empty Nest blog. I just wanted to update everyone on moving my son Will into Appalachian State University in Boone as a freshman.

It was a very smooth process. A cheerful army of volunteers made everything click like clockwork. We were quickly directed to Will's dorm near the football stadium. Our pass gave us only 30 minutes in the parking lot behind the dorm but with so many students and other volunteers helping to take Will's stuff up to his 8th floor room we made it out almost in time.

One pleasant surprise. We ran into Appalachian State Chancellor Kenneth Peacock at Eggers Dorm where Will is staying. The chancellor struck up a warm conversation with us and had his photograph taken with Will. Dr. Peacock impressed me by quoting some comments from our Carolina Conversations blog! He reads it!  He is such a positive and outgoing presence on campus and a tremendous supporter of the back-to-back national championship football team at Boone.

Chancellor Peacock did rib me about the UNC t-shirt I was wearing. He said "Why stop at the Hill when you can go all the way to the Mountaintop?"

Your son will love Appalachian. I was in class of '84 and loved every minute of it. My sister also graduated from there and my grandmother attended when it was a teacher's college. Missing those mountains!

Your blog brought back memories of my freshman year at UNC. A good part of my high school gang (class of '81, gulp) went to ASU. I got sent every bumper sticker they had - this was pre-e-mail, of course. My favorite was a variation on the chancelleror's - "Who needs the Hill, when we've got the mountains!" I've alway's wondered what it would have been like if I'd been there with them. I think they had a much better experience than I had. Not that I'm knocking UNC - but it was such a big, big place.

To Willowdale 3: Must have been a LONG time since you've been in Boone.
Ask your AD why the Tarheels won't play the Mountaineers in football.

GOING BACK A LOT OF YEARS, MY DAD WENT TO APP STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE. HOW HE LOVED THAT SCHOOL. BRINGS BACK A LOT OF MEMORIES ON HIS STORIES ABOUT WINKLERS CREEK. A FEW YEARS AGO, WHILE ON A BUSINESS TRIP THERE I FOUND THE CREEK AND THE WATER IS COLD AS HE SAID IT WAS.

I went to App for two years before transferring to Carolina as a junior. You should have said to the Chancellor, "Did you see 'Deliverance'? It's playing for real about 2 miles down the road."

I wonder, can you order a vodka tonic in Boone these days or is liquor still the path to eternal darnation.

Dang I miss Boone. (Sniff Sniff)

What amazed me when our daughter, now a Junior, first went off to college, is that we didn't have more of an "empty nest" after she shoveled all the "absolutely necessary" items into her small dorm room. Her room at the house seems pretty much the same. And the quantity of this dorm stuff seems to grow every year. I swear, in 1970 I moved into a dorm with two suitcases and a duffel bag. But at that time, we couldn't even have a tv; a small radio was okay but the only other appliances allowed were a coffee pot and a popcorn popper; microwaves were around but they didn't even figure into the mix yet. Granted, that was in the pre-computer days too, when you could get away with turning in a hand-written paper.

Well, glad you made it through the move-in ordeal; he'll be home soon enough with a hamper full of laundry!

Glad to hear it went smoothly. Apps a great school and I'm sure he'll do well. Just remember to send those occassional "for no reason" packages. those were always special for me. And as an App. & UNC alum, I love the "Why stop at the hill" comment.

Bill, I am glad to hear that move-in day went so well and was a memorable experience for Will. I'm sure he will adjust to college life very quickly and your wife can look forward to lots of laundry when he comes home to visit. What a great place to attend college!

I am glad to hear the trip went well. I know that it was hard to leave Will and it will be an adjustment for your family. Best of luck to Will and visit him often. It is always nice to have someone looking out for him while he is there.
