Cool Thoughts

Posted August 16, 2007

Life would be pretty bleak without hope and imagination. Most of us are tired of the awful August heat wave. We pray for rain and await the cooler days of autumn. To help us tough it out today I suggest a bit of visual imagery.

Close your eyes for a moment and think cool thoughts. What comes to mind? Please share.

Here are the first five images that I conjured up:

Tossing football with my son on a crisp November afternoon.

Crossing the Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain.

The 60 foot waterfall on Wilson Creek near Mortimer. (credit Elizabeth Gardner)

Key lime pie.

Cinnamon, Cloves. Apples.

What are your cool thoughts?

    Sitting on the porch
    in the shade
listening to the whine of an electric ice cream freezer going
    while packing in more ice...
    more rock salt.

Sitting on the deck at the Pinnacle Inn on Beech Mtn, wrapped up in my sweats and a blanket drinking some hot tea. (And that *is* in August!)

Raking up a big pile of red and yellow leaves then jumping in the pile with my dog. I love the fall and look forward to the brilliant colors and crisp air all year long. It also helps that my birthday is in the fall- so I also look forward to that.

October and November on UNC-Chapel Hill Campus.....leaves changing on the trees in the quad, a football game in Kenan Stadium, ducking in to Carolina Coffeeshop for a bite to eat and a warm doesn't get much better! Charles Kuralt was on to something when he said that fall in Chapel Hill is majestic.

    1. the smell of the wood burning in nearby chimneys
    2. particularly clear blue skies
    3. golden light flickering from the setting sun on crisp leaves
    4. the State Fair and all the familiar smells of candy apples, popcorn, and onion rings.
    5. early morning fog on the farmland
