Bill LeslieBill Leslie's Carolina Conversations
People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

Beauty in the Blue Ridge Mountains

I need your help on another slogan!  You’ve never let me down and I know you won’t this time.

We are starting a new online multimedia project to celebrate the scenic beauty and cultural traditions across North Carolina.  I need two things from you:

1) an umbrella name for this project and

2) ideas on where we should go and what we should cover

We will give three of my CDs “I Am a River,” “Peaceful Journey,” and “Christmas in Carolina” to the winning entry for the name of the project.  We would like something sweet and snappy.

We begin today with a beautiful slide show put together by WRAL Multimedia Producer Nathan Clendenin who captured the beauty and charm of Grandfather Mountain, Valle Crucis and surrounding areas.

You can look forward to many more presentations like these in the future and have a chance to determine the destinations!

All these are great! I loved the slide show - makes me want to go to Valle Crusis! How about "Coveting Carolina". These are many of the reasons I've stayed here instead of moving away, and why so many continue to move here!

Destination Home. Where we work, play, eat, enjoy arts, the homelife and the sceneery around each home featured in different areas of the state.

You are cranking out some really good ones. Keep those creative juices flowing!

No suggestion yet on a name but don't forget to include the Moses Cone House.

I am a native and nothing says North Carolina like the cardinal. So how about "Where The Cardinal Flies"?

thank you the ones realizing its North Carolina not the "carolinas" do we really want national association to continue with our snobby sister to the south. I have heard it said...nc is the valley of humility between two mountains of conceit..south carolina and the great ...what is it they call themselves...state isnt good eough for virginia...o right the great (rolling eyes) commonwealth of virginia..they sure is common and goet a wealth of airs about them.

I gotta go with broker...the state motto is good enough ...you dont have to reinvent the wheel here...doesnt matter what you call it...you could call it...mudd ugly places in nc...and it will still be beautiful..our state is without a doubt one of the nicest....If you dont count the highways ...we got way too many of them...greensboro area has ruined itsself..just too much ....but that is another rant

How about ""From Murphy to Manteo""

Carolina Splendor

"At Home in North Carolina"

Down Home Journey

Carolina Crossroads

BTW, you can enter as many times as you'd like. "Where the Cardinal Flies" is very creative but these are all good.

How about "From sunrise (coast) to Sunset (mountains) You could start out in the East following all the water ways in the East and end up in the mountain region.

What about "Tarheel Rambler" or "Tarheel Traditions". I think this is a great idea. Anything that promotes our unique traditions and culture is definitely a positive. So many transplants in the state is diluting the identity. This could help them adjust. I love it.

Absolutely to Greggofish... the rivers are an absolute *must*. Also some of our unique architecture including the wonderful old homes of Raleigh, the Biltmore, the Asheville skyline and we cannot leave out Koerner's Folly! Plus you can't have a journal of NC without at least a nod to our expansive university system. Being a State grad, I'd say the Bell Tower is a must, but I guess UNC's Well should be there too ;)

I'd love to see you feature the culture and beauty of North Carolina's native potters. I visit the Seagrove area potters quite often but would love to learn more about other pottery areas in our state.

I notice several retreads from the last contest so why not:

Honeysuckle and Grits: Visions of North Carolina

North Carolina: Our Hidden Treasures......

"Where the Blue Meets the Sky: North Carolina from the Mountains to the Sea"

Hmmm, how bout" North Carolina, Natures Home"

How about "The Beauty Within". I love the mountains and would like to see more on our Native Americans throughout North Carolina.

"Tarheel Treasures", "Tarheel Splendor"

How about "Carolina Wanderings" or "Carolina Wonderings." There is no limit to the possibilities to include. All of our state natural and man-made resources are incredible. Just don't forget us up here in the northeast corner. We have some amazing sites too: The Hope House, The Sans Souci Ferry, Bunns BBQ restaurant, abundant farmland, all our rivers, etc.

A beautiful location to take some pictures in the blue ridge mountains is Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC. It is approximately 15-20 minutes from Boone and ASU. It is nestled between Sugar and Beech Mountains/Ski Resorts. It is also very close to The Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, and the Linville Falls and Caverns.

Some more places would be Emerald Isle and Downtown Swansboro down at the coast.

Don't forget about our military too...Camp Lejeune, Fort Bragg, ect.

"North Carolina: Treasures and Traditions"

Some ideas on material: smaller historic buildings or museums that are everywhere from small towns to bigger cities, such as birthplaces of state or national leaders, civil war trails and sights. Also covering Indian historical places and areas where people still live and work as they have for generations, such as fisherman along the coast.

Excellent trip suggestions and names. A pottery piece is essential, I agree.

1)Tarheel Traveler 2)I would say move from west to east. I think there are many small historic sites that we don't even realize exist

Any of you going to the Highland Games this weekend? Our Multi Media Producer Nathan Clendenin, who put together the slide show, is up there today snapping away. I'm headed for Linville this afternoon. My kilt is in the car.

"Tarheel Reflections" perhaps? or "The Old North State of Mind"?

With a nod to the famous quote about North Carolina--"The Goodliest land under the cope of Heaven."

How about-- North Carolina Travels: Under the Cope of Heaven

or

The Goodliest North Carolina

How about "Must see NC"

Discover North Carolia

Tar Heel Grandeur

North Carolina: "The Beauty and Charm"

North Carolina: "Southern Splendor"

"A Southern Slice of Heaven"

North Carolina: "My Life, My Home"

I had an idea. Why not visit each of the 100 counties and photograph the uniqueness of each one. Bet there are lots of places in each of the counties that most of us don't know about!Could call it "Carolina Morsels" or "TidBits of the Ole' North State."

Pathways of the Great North State (?)

Just don't miss Raven Rock, among so many others !

From the mountains to the sea, the very best of N.C.

NC U There

NOTHING...could be finer than to be in CAROLINA...that's your new slogan....and

don't forget to check out the INN AROUND THE CORNER in Blowing Rock on your travels..then you can truly say..NOTHING...could be finer....it's like being at home!!

When we talk of NC it seems it is always the mountains or the coast. My granddaughter just finished the fourth grade and her last project for the year was to work on a travel brochure for NC. The area she covered was the Piedmont. After reading it I realized how many places we have not seen in NC. We are off to Old Salem for a day trip when she tracks out in 2 weeks. I love the idea of visiting each county and photograph a picture of its most unique area/attraction. I have to admit, I don't think I can find anything better than Avery County. If you want to hear a great song about NC listen to The Grass Cats' "Home to Carolina" from their Home To Carolina CD.

A Hundred Counties A Thousand memories

The top ten places or people in each county.

Hey Bill,

How about Delightful Destinations of North Carolina of Dazzling Destinations of North Carolina.

I made a mistake. I meant to say or between Carolina and Dazzling, but I put of.

Carolina Views or Carolina Visions or Carolina Wonders

North Carolina, Cornucopia of Beauty and Culture

The mountains, caverns, lakes (I especially like Lake Waccamaw). The piedmont has some really scenic back roads and farms. There is so much to see in NC it would take a lifetime to see it all! Outer Banks, the sounds, .........

"Why I like Calling North Carolina Home"

NC Beauty

NC Beauty and Culture

North Carolina - Its Beauty Surrounds You NC - Stop, Look & Listen to Its Beauty

Still working on the slogan, but while travelling, don't forget to see some of the new potters who moved to the Seagrove area. I know the area has a long tradition with many familial lines, but new potters have moved there bringing their considerable talents to an area already brimming full. Tom Gray is one of them. And then when you are in the piedmont, or the center of our great state, don't forget the oldest two year college in the southeast, Louisburg College. Franklin county has several other sites of interest, such as Laurel Mill (which by some miracle is still standing), and Perry's Mill Pond (which had to be restored). Cascine Plantation is a fascinating site as well, but not generally open to visitors, it is still a privately owned plantation, complete with the original home. North Carolina is a beautiful and diverse wonderland of natural and historic treasures.
