People are always asking me where to take vacation. What's a cool place? What's the most scenic drive? Carolina Conversations attempts to answer those questions and others.

NC's Best Ice Cream

Ready. Set. Sweat. We're locked in a heat wave this week so let's battle back. Ice cream, anyone? Frozen custard? How about a smoothie?

Today's question: What is North Carolina's best ice cream? Feel free to include comments on custard and smoothies.

Elizabeth Gardner is a big fan of NC State University's ice cream served up in the student center and at the NC State Fair in October. For store bought her passion is Haagen Dazs caramel cone featuring ribbons of caramel with lumps of cone dipped in chocolate.

Valonda Calloway is craving Cold Stone Creamery chocolate ice cream as I write this. Valonda is also a big fan of Edy's chocolate slow churn.

Mark Roberts and I are in total agreement on our favorite: Kilwin's in Blowing Rock. The butter pecan variety will knock your socks off.

I have a soft spot in my heart for ice cream. My wife proposed to me in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen. We were eating a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate at the time. Today we love take the family to Goodberry's in Cary for a mint chocolate chip concrete.

Chris Thompson says the very best vanilla ice cream in the world can be found near Chapel Hill at Maple View Farms.

What about you? Where do you go for some great ice cream?

I have two favorites...Sunny Skies on Hwy 55 in Angier (they have all flavors, but my favorite is the hot fudge sundae with extra extra wet nuts)...they also offer the cayenne ice cream, but haven't had any desire to try it...and Coldstone Cremery's Coffee Lover's ice cream.

I love Sunni Skies on Highway 55 near the Wake-Harnett line. They have a huge variety of homemade ice cream. They've also got some delicious fat- and sugar-free ice cream.

The kids working there are extremely nice and very good at working through the seemingly endless lines of customers.

Sunni Skies has a large yard with swings and tables. It's a terrific place to spend a summer evening with friends.

The best ice cream ever may be found at Henry's Gelato in Cary. Great smooth taste and loaded with fresh fruit. The strawberry tastes just like fresh from the field! He makes it daily.

Porters Strawberry farm on Hwy 42 in Willow Springs! Try the homemade lemonade also. It is worth the trip. Stay cool if you can :)

Gotta agree with Lion-heart. Henry's Gelato is INCREDIBLE! Never had anything I didnt like!

Best Ice Cream, mmmmm One day two robins were sitting in a tree overlooking a vast field as the farmer plowed. The farmer's activity was stirring up thousands of worms. The two robins fly down and eat their fill of worms until they can eat no more. "I'm just going to lay down and bask in the sun" one says to the other, and they both go to sleep. Two cats come along and eat the birds up. One cat turns to the other and says....wait for it.....

"I just love baskin' robins".

Hunter Wyche, Raleigh

I must say that locally ours is Dairy Queen. There is nothing better than heading to Blowing Rock and Kilwins Ice Cream. Try their Pralines and Cream. Yum!
