Best Beaches

Posted May 30, 2007

What is the best beach in North Carolina?

I post and pose this question as somewhat of a pre-emptive strike.

"Dr. Beach", AKA Dr. Stephen Leatherman is getting ready to release his annual list of the Top 10 Beaches in America and I thought we might want to steal some of his thunder. Leatherman is a coastal scientist and recognized as one of the nation's top authorities on beach quality.

But who is better to rate the beaches of North Carolina than you – faithful Tar Heel Traveler bloggers!

Leatherman has frequently ranked Ocracoke Island as one of the best beaches in America. I can’t argue with that. It’s number one on my list. I am also very high on the beaches of Oak Island.

How about you? Let’s crown the King of the Carolina Beaches
.

Also, thanks for your excellent suggestions for a new blog name!  I have 158 to choose from so far.  Feel free to send some more ideas.

Ocracoke is awesome, as they all are, but I love the beach at Surf City. You walk along the beach there with the dolphins swimming by, the pier in site, a Marine helicopter occasionally flying by. It's the best in my book!

I would have to say that North Topsail does have some of the better beaches in NC. Not much commercial development there other than a fishing pier. The secret is out though and I don't see it lasting long. There are a couple of spots along New River Inlet Rd that are great for people who are not able to afford a place to spend the week end there. There is great access to the beach and there are really no crowds at all. There are still spots along there that you can pull off on the side of the road and park, walk 50' and be on the beach.

Atlantic Beach has always been my favorite. It used to be a nice little fishing spot. Now there is so much development going on and the high priced condos have drastically changed the setting. It's sad.

We love Holden. Going to the beach is simply about the sun, sand, wind and water. Anybody who goes to shop might as well stay home!

None of the NC beaches are any good...go home...you don't want to vacation here, or build a mcmansion, or pollute our air and water. Like someone else said...NJ has nice beaches...go there.

We use to love camping on Salter Path, but thanks to high end condos thats gone forever. The state park on Ocracoke is grand if the bugs don't carry you off.

just got back from camping out on the Cape Hatteras National sea shore at Ocracoke Island. I have been going there sence i was about 3ft tall and it is the best beach anywhere in the country as far as i am concerned.
