You’re not from the Triangle if you say________________________. I’ve decided to fill in the blank. Please feel free to add to my list.

ZEB-yoo-LAWN for Zebulon. It’s ZEB-yoo-lun

Ba-HAHM-uh for Bahama. It’s ba-HAY-muh

WEN-duhl for Wendell. It’s WEN-DELL. Accent on both syllables.

Lake Jordan. It’s Jordan Lake.

ANN-JEER for Angier. It’s ANN-jur.

Ka-TRELL for Kittrell. It’s KIT-trul.

"ECU is ECTC(East Carolina Teacher's College),"

Only if you're really old. My sister graduated from there when it was ECC (after ectc, but before ecu) and she's been retired for a few years now...

If you're from the Triangle, or better yet down home Southeast NC, you refer to our major universities in the following manner: NC State is State College, UNC is Chapel Hill, Duke University is Dukes (don't know where that came from), ECU is ECTC(East Carolina Teacher's College), UNC-W is Wilmington, and Wake Forest is....well, we don't really count them...

Clinton instead of Clinnon

It's FED-ville, not FAY-ET-ville. From a true native, no military connection.

And although I was raised in Raleigh, I was born in DURM (Durham) not DOO-R-HUM as some voice-over artists pronounce it.

I think the town in Vance County is called Hunnerson not Henderson.

I used to do surveying, working alot in Harnett County. After running into dozens of bees nests I changed the way I said it to Hornet County.

har-NETT instead of HAR-nit County. Man, I hate when people say it worng.

One of my favorites is Salisbury,NC - pronounced SALLS-burr-ee.

You are not from the Triangle if you call our area "Raleigh-Durham."

True Story: I was driving through Crossroads shopping maze one day a few years ago, and I saw a new business had just opened up. It was called "Barbeques Galore." While put off somewhat by the plural, I was happy to have another BBQ restaurant to try. Imagine my surprise when I pulled into the lot and saw that they were selling grills!

That's when I knew I was no longer in the south.

Thank you fishnet for the Top-Sul. I live here, and people wonder why we ask them "Where are y'all from?" I love it when they say "Winston" with their Jersey accent and talk loudly on their phones to family from up north about how humid it is.

"What about Chicken Slick? Where did that one come from?"

If you've eaten it, you'll know {:*)

We measure distance in time traveled rather than miles.

i.e. My parents live an hour East of Raleigh.

Interesting thought, although with the number of residents there it probably wouldn't be noticed.

Yep, Conetoe (con-E-a) is right near Pinetops, but then shouldn't that be pronounced "pin-E-tops"?

I thought hushpuppies were a type of shoe. Also, that Ocra was really Oprah....LOL I have tried both, and they are rather tasty. :-)

What about Chicken Slick? Where did that one come from?

Fuqua instead of Fuquay. I have heard it butchered many times even by sports announcers when local guys play for college teams.

My favorite - its Top sUL Island NOT TopSAIL Island. And Bo ge Inlet NOT BOgee Inlet!lol And we go to the beach not the ocean or to the lake(White Lake). And we eat chicken and PASTRY NOT chicken and dumplings - major difference in this neck of the woods! Have a great day Ya'll! :)

"We are getting ready to barbecue." instead of "We are fixin to cook out."

Conetoe is easy to find according to my father. Just go to the corner of the world and hang a left. Its right there.

This is an obvious one, but we know you aren't from here if you say your son/daughter goes to "Appl-ay-shan State".

Thanks very much for all this....I have been correct all these years, and someone else knows where Conetoe is.

If you dont know what grits are your not from here!! People dont know that grits can go with every meal from fried fish to a sandwich. Ask my grandma!!

How about "CAR" Lake (or Drug Store) instead of "KERR" lake. And, its not always "_______ Lake", not, "Lake _________"... there are exceptions... Falls Lake, Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, High Rock Lake, Kerr Lake, Lake Gaston... Why is that?

""challie beat" instead of "kallibitt" for Challybeate Springs"

Whoops, I should have read further before I posted.

". . . barbeque instead of cook out" LOL

Yep, if you thing barbeque is a verb, you're not from around here.

Oh yeah, how many of you know how to pronounce Chalybeate Springs?

Me-bain instead of meh-bin for Mebane

Bahama was actually named for my ancestors. It was named for the BAll, HArris, & MAngum families, not for the island in the Carribean. Anybody named Mangum or Ellis from that area is probably my distant cousin (lucky them!).

You are not from the Triangle if you say "challie beat" instead of "kallibitt" for Challybeate Springs (although most of us have sounded this out several times just for fun)

Family....for....Kin...or Keen

Or, as one country gentleman said to me, "Did y'all move here for keen? (it took me a minute, but then I figured out that he meant family) We Love the Triangle !!!

. . . barbeque instead of cook out

HARRRR NETT instead of harnit for Harnett County!

It's Rocky MOUNT; not ROCKY Mount. Emphasis on the last word, not the first. Pam Salsby, bless her heart, still mispronounces this.

You're not from the Triangle if you say...

"I wish things were more like they were back home"

instead of

"Why do they keep coming down here and ruining EVERYTHING!!"

LU-CA-MA FOR LUCAMA. NOT LU-CAM-A

DU-Raleigh for Dur-a-leigh!

CONE-Toe

it's Con-e-ta

HELLO...for.....HEY

HEN-a-son for Henderson Twyla
