Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

What are your favorite graduation memories? College or high school. It doesn’t matter. Maybe it was an inspirational speech. Perhaps it was the giddy laughter of a graduate or the sea of tassels turning on a beautiful blue sky day.

I have no memory of my graduation from UNC. It’s because I didn’t go. I really regret that. When I graduated it was considered “cool” to skip the ceremony and accept the diploma in the mail from Chapel Hill. So I have no photos. No videos. No memories. How sad.

I am so glad that my daughter Lauren considered it "cool" to attend her college graduation. We had a great time in Boone this past weekend renting a cabin along the New River and celebrating her degree in elementary education from Appalachian State University. We did it up right: the special cake, a couple of nice dinners, lunch with the chancellor. And lots of photos.  View an audio slideshow from the weekend.

What about you? Please share your graduation memories.

Bill I love your audio slideshow as well. It made me have tears in my eyes to see your family together happy and healthy and enjoying the days that make life good as you make those memories that you tuck away in your heart and bring out every now and then. She is a beautiful young lady. You have a nice looking family all the way around. Congrats again to Lauren. :)

Please extend my congratulations to Lauren. I have followed her education and desire to enter the teaching profession since I was one of her eighth grade teachers. I wish Lauren only the best in the years to come.

I FINALLY graduated from UNC, 7 years after dropping out after my junior year. My wife, mom and sisters "made" me go to Kenan Stadium despite my minimizing this accomplishment. Bill Cosby was awesome and I'll never regret that day. Talk about not cool, there I was, 29 years old, sitting in the stands surrounded by a bunch of kids w/ my mom hugging me and crying her eyes out!

I graduated from Appalachian State in 1987 (Ye Gods!) and it was the last time all of my grandparents were gathered in one place. I was the first grandchild to graduate from college, so it was a very special occasion, and it was the most GORGEOUS day ever. So congrats to your daughter, Mr. Leslie. I am sure she will do well.

My favorite moment was graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill last spring. It was a gorgeous day, and just seeing the crowd of baby blue robes was enough to have me choked up all throughout the ceremony. I'm the first in my family to graduate from college, so my family was very excited for me. Near the end of the ceremony, Chancellor Moeser remarked how our "friends" 8 miles down the road in Durham must have been mad since they were graduating at that same time, under "Carolina blue" skies! It made us all laugh, but soon we were crying as we sung the alma mater one last time as undergrads. I miss that experience even today.

I am graduating on Saturday from NCSU. I am so excited and hope to take lots of pictures of the occasion. It's a big deal in my family since I am a first generation graduate from University. Congrats on Lauren graduating as well.

I graduated from East Carolina on my parents wedding anniversary in 1985. I said that was their present from me - their first born had graduated from college!
