Weekend Getaway: Yadkin Valley

Posted Updated

Winter doldrums got you down? How about a road trip? Our Weekend Getaway takes us to Yadkin Valley. This is North Carolina's first federally recognized wine region. It is an area northwest of Winston-Salem and includes 14 wineries and more than 400 acres of vineyards.

We will start our tour in Dobson at Shelton's, the largest family-owned winery in North Carolina and winner of several prestigious awards. For lunch and/or dinner we will try either the Harvest Grill at Shelton's or The Wolf's Lair Restaurant at the Black Wolf Vineyards.

Accomodation possibilities in the area include the Thompson House B&B in Mount Airy or Madelyn's in the Grove B&B to the south in Union Grove. For some exercise we will take a hike at Stone Mountain State Park. In Elkin we will visit The John Furches Gallery on Main Street. We might even have time to check out Ben Long's fresco at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro.

On the way back to Raleigh I'd like to taste some barbeque at CD's Smoke House in Harmony. Here are a couple of good websites for more information:
