Weekend Getaway: Banner Elk

It's a perfect weekend for a journey to the mountains. Destination: Banner Elk. Home of Lees-McRae College, some great food, a hip snowboard shop and neighbor to four ski resorts.

The weather has been perfect this week generating some natural snow and cold enough to make plenty of the manufactured variety. Elizabeth Gardner highly recommends Edge of the World as a hip place to buy or rent snowboards.

Louisana Purchase is a great place to eat. It's a little fancy compared to the other places in town. I've had both good and mediocre meals at the Corner Palate. Your best bet may be to load up on carbs at Sorrento's, home of a some scrumptious pasta.

With a high temperature of 50 degrees tomorrow, skiing should be great especially early in the day. Your choices for skiing and snowboarding include Hawksnest, Appalachian, Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain.

Have a great time on the slopes!

I love Boone/Banner Elk. I just don't drink the water when I go. I do enjoy eating at Stonewalls. I got pregnant there in Banner Elk Valentine's weekend '98 and now she is a blonde haired, blue eyed basketball lovin' tomgirl. She knows Banner Elk is where she was concieved and giggles everytime we are there.

I get my daily "visual" weather check for my favorite spots in NC by going to www.highcountrywebcams.com You can check for yourself on the snow at our ski resorts.

I went to Lees McRae College for 2 years and finished up college at Appalachian State. I can honestly tell you that Banner Elk and the surrounding areas are some of the most beautiful areas on this planet. Banner Elk is absolutely magical.

I wanna go too!! I love the mountains..especially the Boone/Blowing Rock area. I love all the incredible beauty. Enjoy for all of us that can't be there.

I wanna go!!!!! I love Banner Elk. I am planning a trip up there in mid-February. When you're talking food, don't forget Stonewalls for a great prime rib. And there's a tapas place on the way to Beech Mountain - I can't remember the name of it, but the food was great! Hope you have a wonderful time!
