Mount Pilot Fun Girls

Next week on our Hometown Hello segment on the morning news we will be featuring NC communities mentioned in The Andy Griffith Show. One of those towns is Pilot Mountain north of Winston-Salem. It was referred to in the show as Mount Pilot.

I did a little Youtube research this morning on the various mentions of Mount Pilot on the popular television series.  The first thing that popped up was Mount Pilot - home of the "fun girls." I watched part of the segment and laughed just like I always did when I watched Andy Griffith. The flirtatious and platinum blonde "fun girls" persuaded Deputy Barney Fife to introduce them to Sheriff Andy Taylor and take them on a tour of the jail and office when they were supposed to be conducting an inventory. You will be able to see wonderful episodes like this one on The Andy Griffith Marathon this weekend on WRAL TV.

What other mentions of Mount Pilot do you recall on the program? And other than Mount Airy what other NC towns have a connection to Andy who passed away this week at age 86?

Don't forget Siler City.

Glad someone mentioned Siler City .. it was mentioned a few times. Plus you can't forget that Frances Bavier retired to Siler City after a lifetime in show business; she died there 20+ years ago. I think she said she was invited down there for some kind of promotional purpose a couple of times and like the place. She had no other link there but the show and things related to the show prior to moving there.

I watched most of the Andy marathon yesterday and was very disappointed that many of the final scenes were cut out in favor of cramming in more commercial time. And they were the same commercials over and over and over.

My family is from Pilot Mountain. Born and Bred. Proud. My last name is Gordon. Moved away as I got older, but every Labor Day weekend, every year, Family Reunion brings me home again. I thought I had seen every episode there was, at least 100 times, no joke. One reason was I thought my dad looked so much like Andy Griffith. No one sees the resemblence but me,but Andy Griffith for me was being home. One night, Andy calls Barney from vacation. "You doin' alright Barn?"? "Yep Andy, but those Gordon Boys are kicking up some fuss, I had to lock'em up til it wears off." Now my dad was oldest of seven kids. I called him to hear his side of the story......you just never know. I do know one of my best friends lived near Early Gilleys' Store. Another treat "then" 1964? was to see Andy's picture in the bus station in Mt.Airy. Big as Life, same as Andy.

Another "Mount Pilot" episode was when "Barney" went to the war surplus store and came back with the side car that he bought.

I remember Siler City being mentioned, too as "capitalland" mentioned. Also, when Malcom Tucker's car broke down, he was on his way to Charlotte.

The italian place was 'Morrelli's. I remember Siler City, Raleigh, and although its in Va., Fancy Gap being mentioned.

Hubcaps Lesh's stolen car operation was based in Mount Pilot.

call the man... just call the man.... lol

Barney used to come to Raleigh to party! He'd get a corner room at the "Y".

Wasn't there a YMCA at the Northeast corner of Capital Square that's now a parking lot?
