Weekend Getaway: Bryson City

Posted December 22, 2006

Our weekend getaway involves both road and rail. Destination: Bryson City west of Asheville. It's a good five hour plus drive from Raleigh but it'll be worth it. We're going to take the Polar Express once we get there. The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has a real life version of the animated classic film. We'll take an 8:00PM excursion run across the magical mountain landscape of Swain County. We'll meet Santa, sing some carols, drink hot chocolate and enjoy the sights and sounds of Christmas. For accomodations we have chosen the Folkestone Inn, a beautifully restored mountain farmhouse known for its gourmet breakfasts featuring blueberry pancakes and Cartago coffee. On the way back to the Triangle we might take in a little skiing at Cataloochee. See you in the mountains!

Bryson City is my FAVORITE location in the NC mountains. It is absolutely gorgeous and not yet as commercialized as closer spots, but unfortunately commercialism is on its way to Bryson City. They have an amazing independent, non-profit animal shelter (PAWS) that is funded solely by spay/neuter grants and private donations, mostly from tourists. Folkestone Inn is lovely. Bill and family should have a wonderful time!!

Bryson City is near and dear to my heart having parents that grew up in that area. I still have family in Bryson. The whole railroad event sounds like something from a fairy tale. I am sure that Inn is gorgeous.

Have a safe and wonderful trip Bill. Merry Christmas to you and your family. :)
