Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations
"People are always asking me where to take vacation. What’s a cool place? What’s the most scenic drive?" WRAL News Anchor Bill Leslie attempts to answer those questions and others in his Carolina Conversations blog.
Old Salem: Weekend Getaway
The coast will be too wet. The mountains will be too cold. So toss the dart and where does it land? Old Salem is our Tar Heel Traveler Weekend Getaway destination. Sure, you’ve tried the Moravian sugarcake and ginger snaps but you want more. Well, you will find it this weekend in a hot air balloon feature. Try your hand at making traditional hot air balloons, then watch as your balloon soars across the sky! Enjoy drop-in activities from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. Stop by and see Sue Crawford at the Marketplace. Sue runs a wonderful shop at Old Salem and I love her accent. Check out her selection of Moravian stars. I picked up one during my last trip and it made a beautiful addition to our home Christmas decorations. My good friend Bob Inskeep and meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner both like the Tavern Restaurant at Old Salem. It has been a while since I have dined there but my memories are very positive. Immerse yourself in the simple yet sacred Moravian lifestyle at Old Salem. The grounds are lovely. They've rebounded well from a severe beating from Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Founded in 1766 by the Moravian Congregation of Pennsylvania, Old Salem is one of the best examples of colonial life in the United States. The costumed guides explain the life of these early settlers. Don't forget Winkler Bakery. Who could forget with powerfully magnetic fragrances coming from the kitchen?
