Pronunciation Potholes

As we travel across the state it's important to avoid pronunciation potholes. Here is a partial list of commonly mispronounced names. I'll have some more tomorrow.

MEBANE MEB-un.
FORSYTH for-SYTH. Accent on the second syllable.
WATAUGA wah-TAW-guh
AHOSKIE ah-HOSS-kee.
CATAWBA kah-TAW-guh
NORLINA nor-LY-na
BEAUFORT BOE-furt. In SC, it's BEU-furt (40)
APPALACHIAN ap-uh-LATCH-un.
BAHAMA bah-HAY-ma
CASHIERS KASH-urs
WENDELL WEN-DELL You said

It was named after Oliver Wendell Holmes but they stretched the second syllable out
because the train conductor would say WENNN-DELLL! That stuck with the locals.
ZEBULON ZEB-yoo-luhn. It is not a lawn service.
ANGIER And it's not ANJEER but rather ANN-jur
SHALLOTTE sha-LOTE
SALISBURY SAULS-berry
ROBESON ROB-uh-son.
BERTIE BURR-TEE
KURE KURR-ee Beach.
