NC's Greatest Sports Celebrations!

Posted June 13, 2006

The Carolina Hurricanes are on the cusp of the Cup! A win over Edmonton tomorrow night at the RBC Center in Raleigh would secure hockey's greatest prize for Raleigh. What kind of victory celebration could it trigger? Will Hillsborough Street become the party place? Will it be anything like NC State's national basketball championship celebrations in 1974 and 1983? Will it match the excitement and fervor of the Tar Heel basketball championship celebrations in 1957, 1982, 1993 and 2005? And what about Duke's three national basketball championships under the leadership of Coach K? The UNC women had a national basketball championship in the previous decade. Appalachian State scored a national championship in their NCAA football division is past season. In the professional ranks the Carolina Panthers came close to winning the Super Bowl. That would have turned Charlotte into Frenzy Central but the Cats fell just short. I would like to get your comments on what a Stanley Cup conquest would mean for the state of North Carolina.
