Weekend Getaway: Manteo
Posted August 18, 2006
Gotta hustle on down toward the Outer Banks for a birthday party tonight. Our Weekend Getaway destination is Manteo. The party is for Virginia Dare, the first child of English parents born in America. 419 years ago today Virginia was born on Roanoke Island. Three years later Virginia and the rest of the Roanoke Island colony vanished in what remains a great mystery today. Here’s what we’ll do this weekend. It’s going to be busy. We’ll check in this afternoon at the Tranquil House Inn on Shallowbag Bay in Manteo. We’ll have dinner at the Waterfront Trellis. Then we’ll head on over to the theatre under the stars to learn more about Virginia Dare in America’s longest running outdoor drama “The Lost Colony.” Can you name the Harnett County native who wrote it? Tomorrow we rise early to take in the sunrise at Cape Hatteras. We’ll also take a stroll through the maritime forest at Buxton Woods. Then we’ll head north on Highway 12 and enjoy kayaking in the maritime forest near Kitty Hawk. In the afternoon we’ll visit the Wright Brothers Memorial and catch a few rays on the beach at Nags Head. We’ll settle down for a nice seafood dinner Saturday night. Sunday before returning to Raleigh we will visit the Manteo state park featuring the Elizabeth II, a replica of the 16th century sailing vessel that brought the first colonists to Roanoke Island. We will also browse through the blooms of the Elizabethan Gardens. Maybe we’ll even run into Andy Griffith who lives in Manteo.
