Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations

Contest winner & mountains

Barbara Williams wins the Cellphone Photo Contest with her image of Mabry Milll on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Congratulations Barbara! I will send her a CD of her choice. If Barbara wants to wait a few weeks I have a new album coming out – "A Midnight Clear – Christmas in Mitford."  I recently learned that Barbara is a good friend of Bob Inskeep. Bob is my radio buddy from WRAL FM. He now works as a Presbyterian minister in Raleigh.

Speaking of the mountains and photographs you might want to plan a trip to the western part of our state this fall. I am getting indications that the autumn foliage this year could be spectacular. If you’re looking for some great scenery you may want to consider Mabry Mill in Virginia. But if you want to stay in North Carolina consider Bakersville as a starting point. You’ve got Dellinger’s Historic Mill on Cane Creek and the glorious Roan Mountain nearby.

If you’re looking for a book to help you plan your travels I would suggest the new edition of Carolyn Sakowski’s Touring the Western North Carolina Backroads. Carolyn has crafted 21 driving tours that will take you to superb scenery away from the crowds. Carolyn grew up in my hometown of Morganton. She is truly an expert on nooks and crannies that that will knock your socks off.
