Treadmill and Outdoor Running

This morning  I took my 5k training to the road.  I am mixing things up as I prepare to run next month's Komen Triangle Race for the Cure at Meredith College.

I have to be honest, road running does not thrill me.  My preference is to run on a treadmill grooving to the tunes blasting into my ears on my I-pod.  Don't tell me. I already know this is bad for my hearing.

Unlike South Florida where I've spent the lion's share of my life, North Carolina's terrain sure is hilly by comparison.  That makes for a heck of a challenge for anyone venturing outside to run. It demands more from your body.

Given that the Race for the Cure is an outdoor event, I have been advised to do at least 60 percent of my training outdoors.  That way, I'm better prepared for the demands on my muscles, the weather, and the varied road conditions.

Presently,  I'm not doing 60 percent, and I'm not doing 5 kilometers.  I'm getting there, though. It's hard.  I have about one month left until race day.  I am not worried.  I am motivated.

Folks who know far more than I do, claim that you can recreate running outside on a treadmill by setting your incline at 1%.  Oh really?  I beg to differ.  I've tried it.  It sure doesn't work for me.

What about you?  Do you prefer the treadmill or running outside?  And, how do you feel about that argument that you can simulate outdoor running on a treadmill? I could use some convincing here.

Outside. Hands down.

For whatever reason, treadmill running doesn't do it for me. I guess I have to have that sense of "scenery-passing-me-by" that you just can't get running on a treadmill. Plus, no matter how hard I try, I can't keep myself from "clock-watching". If I'm outside, though, it's easier to loose track of time -- and voila! I've run as far as I wanted to or even farther.

You can not recreate exterior conditions inside. I prefer the treadmill, but I notice a huge difference when I do run outside. When you do train on the mill, try running inclines. That should help some. Alot of my real runner friends (I am primarily a swimmer) love to run at Umstead. Try doing some sprinting too. This is what my friends have encouraged me to do and it has helped. Good Luck!

First of all, I don't run, but I walk.

I prefer walking outside because I enjoy nature, even when it's cold in winter.

But at this time of year, I go inside to the treadmill. I have found that when I walk at this time of year through Sept. or so, there are LOTS of big bugs that seem to zero in on my eyes or ears or hair, and I hate it. And, it's so humid and hot that it's most uncomfortable to me anyway. Thus, the boredom of the treadmill until it's cooler outside.

Just my two cents!!!!

Sorry, running on the treadmill is never going to be as effective as training outdoors. It is easier on you because the ground is softer and you don't have to challenge your muscles by changing your stride like you would outside. On a treadmill it is hard to really work without running intervals at high inclines. Personally, I love running outside and abhor treadmills. Outside, at least the scenery changes! If you could find a nice route that was on less busy streets or in a park you might enjoy it more.
