Cross-Train Much?

I already know that it is important for runners to vary their workouts. Cross-train.

The experts say it prevents injuries, keeps you from getting bored with running, and that it helps balance our muscle groups.  I get all of that.

Now that I am training again for the Komen NC Triangle Race for the Cure, I find that all I want to do is run.

I know that it's wrong.  The last thing I want to do is hurt myself,  but my mind seems fixed on building up endurance.

There are days I take a break from running on the treadmill or the green ways.   I do some strength training, the elliptical machine, and walking.  I don't like the stationary bike so much.  They're all okay, but that's it.  I don't love any of the cross-training exercises I do.

Do you?  When you're not running, is there any particular sport or exercise that you especially enjoy?

I'd like to know what lights you up.  There's nothing like getting out there and working it out with gusto!

Give pilates a try! It works every muscle group and can be very relaxing. I do DVDs at home. I especially like the Mari Windsor series. I also love the stability ball with my weights. Great exercises can be found online for the stability ball. Have fun!

Pam come Run with us at the beginning of our 48 State Run which will start in Raleigh. Hope to see you there

Pam, I recommend taking the route of this veteran workout specialist. You see I have been jazzercising for a good ten years. I know, I know who the heck jazzercises anymore?!?!? Well I do and this quick introductory video will help you 'Shake That Boogie Body'... Run along and shake it!

Aside from running in prep for future 5K events (I used to run in high school and college, and now in my early middle age I'm trying to get back into it), I take a great cycling class after work and on weekends at the gym I attend in the Regency area. I also enjoy the elliptical machine, or the rowing machine, on which you can choose from pre-set distances like 1000M or 5000M. Pulling 5000M at a good, hard clip takes about 30 minutes, so it's a nice distance. Weight training makes me feel strong and has helped me eliminate any lower back pain I used to have. Cathe Friedrich's workout DVDs are excellent too if you like to work out at home with dumbells, step, stability ball, etc. She can be seen on one of the cable channels a few times a day as well. I'm back up to running 2 mi. nonstop without walking or getting winded, so I'm getting there! Another few weeks and I'll be ready!
