COLUMBIA, SC — America's top dog, the beagle Uno, is content to rest on his laurels.

South Carolina-based trainer Aaron Wilkerson tells The State newspaper of Columbia that Uno, the charismatic canine crowned best in show at last month's Westminster Kennel Club, is retiring.

Uno's handlers had said the nation's top pooch would seek 17 more best in show titles in an attempt to reach 50 career wins.

But Wilkerson says the Illinois-born beagle has already achieved the ultimate honor.

Westminster officials say most best in show winners retire after a win.

Spokesman David Frei says the last repeat winner was in 1972.

The last dog to try for a second win was a fox terrier in 1993.

Frei says most winners become breeders, in hopes of producing another top dog.
