DURHAM, N.C. — Durham’s Parks and Recreation Department will host the grand opening of the Northgate Dog Park on Saturday in conjunction with the Skyhoundz Competition and Woofstock celebration.

Hundreds of dogs and their owners are expected to gather at Northgate Park, 300 W. Club Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to participate in the celebration.

Novice and veteran contestants and their dogs will compete in the Skyhoundz Competition, a disc-dog competition series at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Mixed breeds as well as purebreds can earn points for basic throws and catches, with bonus points for mid-air catches in the distance/accuracy event.

Dogs not participating in Skyhoundz can compete for top honors in the farthest biscuit toss, best trick, memorable Egg Race, a limbo contest, musical sit and much more. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

The Animal Protection Society of Orange County will be at the event, and Sue King of Companion Chi will demonstrate the finesse of canine massage. Adoption groups will also be at the event with dogs that need a home.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 919-560-4355.
