What Are You Doing to Celebrate Earth Day?

Gardeners of the Piedmont ... Unite!

It's Earth Day, and aside from my disappointment with not having Dave Matthews tickets tonight, it's a great day for gardeners. I thought it would be nice to share a few eco-friendly ideas and tactics my family practices ... and hope you'll share some of your great ideas with us! I posted some photos of my gardens for reference.

  • Replace your outdoor light bulbs with CFLs.
  • Be good stewards of nature: place birdhouses and bird feeders in peaceful, low-trafficked areas of your garden.
  • Plant perennials, bulbs and trees.
  • Plant a vegetable garden or some fruit trees.
  • Keep your garden weed-free; weeds are water and nutrient hogs, and are fierce competition for your "real" plants.
  • Combat mosquitoes naturally, like with lavender.
  • Notice the little things, like the ladybugs and butterflies.
  • Use canvas shopping bags at the grocery store and farmer's markets.
  • Have a little fun!

What are you doing in your garden for Earth Day?

Dolly-I've missed you and your weekly gardening updates! Glad to see you join us again for Earth Day. I try to use canvas bags at the grocery store, weed my garden on a regular basis, strive to replace all my light bulbs with CFL's, turn off lights when I leave a room, turn down the heat, turn up the AC, use water wisely and just really use common sense around the house. One thing I want to do for fun is take my grandson to see the new Disney nature film "Earth". The reviews have been wonderful. Again, welcome back!

Thanks for all the "green" tips.

Thanks so much, Iris ... that's so nice to hear! I'm also going to see Earth; the footage looks breathtaking. It is truly a wonderful planet we have.

Happy Erth Day! While I do not celebrate earth day, We have made it a fun day for our family by celebrating Erth Day. My wife and my daughter both have the middle name "Erth", so we celebrate Erth Day at our house.

The earth day celebration is just a bunch of feel-good-ism. The global warming issue is not a reality - there is no long term data to see if this is a problem or a cyclical weather pattern. I can remember when I was in hish school in the late 1970's when they were talking about the impending Ice-Age. And when the like of Al Gore talk about global warming while he resides in the largest private home in Tennessee that uses more than (4) times the amout of energy as the average home, you have to question the motives of the global warming crowd.

Regardless, have a great Erth Day!

I have been a planting fool for the past 3 days! I love it!
