Where Can I Buy Seeds for A Veggie Garden?

I was reading an interesting letter last weekend in the newspaper, and one of the suggestions made by the contributor was that we should all plant and sustain our own vegetable garden.

I have long been a proponent of sustainable gardening and community supported agriculture, and have even tended my own bountiful garden back in the day ... but life and kids and work have gotten in the way over the last decade. So I thought for 2009 me and the mister (and the little man) would get back to our roots, so to speak, and plant a patch. A veggie patch.

In the past we've gotten young plants from Logan Trading Co. in Raleigh, and herbs from one of the local home improvement stores. But this year, since I'm pulling out the heavy duty gardening gloves, I think it would be nice to start some vegetables from seeds. My favorites: sweet tomatoes, cucumbers, silver queen corn, zucchini, and green beans.

  • Do you buy vegetable seeds?
  • Locally or from a catalog?
  • If a catalog, which ones?
  • Have you ever grown watermelon? Any suggestions?

Here are some of my favorite mail order web sites. www.johnnyseeds.com www.tomatogrowers.com www.totallytomato.com www.burpee.com www.seedsofchange.com www.seedsavers.org www.parkseed.com www.cooksgarden.com www.richters.com

Thank you for the great information, mr g.

I'm looking into the method called square foot gardening. With what seems to be a long, cold winter still upon us, I'm looking forward to some veggie planting in the spring when temps are warmer & the world seems nicer.

I have also just gotten a flier for "Beginning Vegetable Gardening: Come Learn How to Make Your Garden Grow". Wake County Master Gardener, Jim Cummings, will be leading the discussion at the Eva Perry Library on February 10 at 7 pm. He might have some good info!

Stokes.com has some of the best seed and biggest variety we've tried. they sell by the packet or pound. We love the new varieties of sweet corn they offer, but be sure to reference the zone and planting times. We are very excited to be trying a Biltmore hybred tomato this year and look forward to a better growing season than last year(too dry). Try a bi-color super sweet corn(yummy) and a white corn by the name of Snow or Blizzard. When you look at watermelon seed choose a disease resistent variety, fungus causes end rot. We also put melon up on packing crates to prevent this but it only helps some. Good luck and great gardening.

Buy locally and you can be certain of receiving fresh seed, sound advise and be able to purchase the varieties which are best suited for your location. Holt True Value Hardware in Princeton, NC has been operating since 1906 and is the perfect retail for all of your gardening needs.

The catalogs began arriving about Christmas!!! Its so hard to narrow down the choices!!

Wal-Mart has some decent prices on seeds... ( good luck with the deer, moles, birds and rabbits! )

I use Gurney's. Never had a seed that didn't germinate. Their hybrids are awesome. gurneys.com
