According to the 2008 NC State Fair Web site, the first State Fair was held in 1853 and hosted by the State Agricultural Society. In 1905 President Theodore Roosevelt spoke to fairgoers. And in 1960, it only cost adults 75¢ and children 35¢ to get in.
Quite an interesting history, to be sure. But in the 155 years that the NC State Fair has been around, can you imagine how many yummy jars of homemade jams and jellies have graced the state fairgrounds? Mmm ...
And even though mine is not award-winning, I love to make homemade jam. Strawberry freezer jam is super easy, and a crowd favorite. Blueberry is also really tasty and easy to make. But I'm hoping for some interesting new ideas to try at home. If you're a fair-going type, check out the homemade goods and let us know if there's any interesting new flavors.
