I thought I’d post a follow-up from January 3, when we discussed starting seeds in your windowsill. Life’s been hectic around my house since the holidays, so I opted to force daffodils rather than winter seeds. Check out the photos on the right.
Around January 10, I began the process of growing a handful of daffodil bulbs indoors. Using small jelly jars that are around six inches tall and three or four inches around, I layered smooth river pebbles in the bottom to give the roots something to grow around. The rocks also help to weight down the jars so they won’t get top-heavy and topple over when the daffodils bloom.
The bulbs are growing in a window in our living room, and have about eight hours of full, filtered light. I’m guessing I’ve got another three or four weeks until they bud and bloom. This is the first I’ve ever forced daffodils inside; but it’s been such an easy and (so far) successful venture that I may add this to my annual winter To Do list.
- Do you have any bulbs growing indoors now?
- Have you ever grown daffodils indoors? Did they bloom?
