Help! I Need Some New Houseplants

Last year was a busy year at the Sickles house, and two of my oldest houseplants bit the dust. They lived in an ornately-designed plant stand in our foyer, with filtered sunlight and fresh air when the front door opened.

It was sad, and I missed the beautiful, air-filtering and oxygenating Schefflera's, but was temporarily placated with two stunning red poinsettias. But now that the holidays are over, and we don't keep poinsettias in the house because of our pets, I find that I need to replace those houseplants.

I was disappointed in my search at two of the big home improvement stores in Apex, because the only houseplants they have are the gigantic palm tree-style plants or the rubber plants that are just not my style. One of the employees told me that I would probably need to wait until April or May when the ferns started coming in, but I thought that seemed a bit extreme.

Something different than the standard peace lily, philodendron, African violet, or bamboo would be nice. I've got an amaryllis just opening with blooms, and I'm forcing some daffodils ... but once they bloom they're done. I stay away from orchids because I'm like Typhoid Mary to them, and Norfolk pines would much prefer to remain in Norfolk than at my home.

I could always just get a sweet potato at the grocery store and start it as a vine, but I'd like an upright plant. Surely I'm not the only gardener needing to replenish the indoor garden in the winter.

p.s. it is easier to peel off the skin on the avocado seed when it is still moist.

I see nothing wrong with high quality silk plants for times like this. However, another idea for starting a plant from a seed would be to try an avocado seed. Dry out the seed and peel off the outer skin layer. Poke 3 toothpicks in the center of the seed so it can be held up in a tall glass of water. Only the sprouting end of the seed should be in the water. This can be fun to watch grow and your sons will enjoy seeing the roots grow into the clear glass. When it gets lots of roots, transplant it into a pot with soil keeping the top end out, and hope for the best. I knew a man who grew his plant over six feet tall. Keep it indoors. I have never tried planting them outside. (But you could try it!)

Lowes man! I have an empty pot -that needs a plant- can I stop by, do you happen to have a spare houseplant I can use? :)

There is a craigslist posting today for someone selling a huge number of houseplants at discount prices because s/he's moving. The location is N. Raleigh.

Hi Dolly

The best places to buy house plants I've found are Logan's and Atlantic Ave Orchid & Garden Center in Raleigh. Closer to home, I buy a lot of plants at Lowes Home Improvement and Walmart in Knightdale. The last plant I bought was a Parlor Palm. It was a little tricky at first finding a place for it to be happy, but it seems to like the south-facing window with bright but diffused light (lots of oaks in the yard). I have a Moondrop Scheffelera and it loves the same window. Aloes are cool, and they will flower eventually. I have one that was small but now it looks like a giant squid trying to escape the pot. One that you should be able to find soon is a Shamrock, I have a green one that flowers white. It's more bushy than upright, but I think it's so pretty. Snake plants are upright, they may look plain, but I found out this year that they will flower too, I was so happy with that. The flowers are pale yellow and resemble honeysuckle.

Southern Living had an article in the most recent issue about indoor ferns that were pretty and easy care. I agree about Logans, they have a great selection of houseplants year round. Homewood Nursery does as well.

Hey cleanup. Haven't seen you in a while. Hope you're having a great new year!

I've had the same geraniums for 2+ years now in hanging baskets - they seem to like it indoors, tolerate no water for up to 2 weeks, and i love the smell of the leaves. They even bloom indoors (but only on the side facing the window).

Our bananna tree is doing well indoors too. We chopped it down from 6 ft tall to just 1ft tall back in September - it grew a new stem and leaves within a week. So we have a very managable sized tree in the house for winter.

Most excellent, fernvalley and snick1147. Thanks for the info. I think I'll head over to Logan's over the weekend ...

There are many options, depending on the height. For taller plants try a draceana, the species of the cornplant; species: Janet Craig, reflexa, marginata, or Warneckii. You may want to try scheff's again. either the large or small leaf, some of which can be variegated. For mid to small range, try calatheas, these are easy to grow and get a lot of comments with their large leaves and varied patterns. A good place to go for a wide variety of species would be Logan's, but be prepared to pay!
