Gerbera Daisies

I was a little sad over the weekend as we took down our holiday decorations, mourning the loss of color and interesting things to look at. So when I was at the grocery store I picked up a quickie $3 bundle of pink gerbera daisies to put on the mantle. It's amazing how three little flowers can lift the spirit.

Gerbera daisies have long been one of my favorite cut flowers. I prefer the pale pink or vibrant fuchsia hues to any other, but am never choosy when my boys are bringing them home. According to Wikipedia, there are "about 30 species of Gerbera daisies that grow in the wild, extending to South America, Africa, Madagascar, and tropical Asia." They're a genus of ornamental plants from the sunflower family, and it's easy to see the similarities with the large array of petals and large capitulum (the center "dot").

Daisies like to have a full supply of fresh, clean water. So, make sure your vase has plenty of water and that it's changed about every other day to lengthen the life of your cut Gerbera's.

  • Are you a fan of Gerbera or other daisies?
  • What's your favorite color bloom?

For the past two summers I have purchased a gerbera daisy and potted it in a larger pot. I keep them outside until the weather cools and then I bring them inside and put them next to a window that gets filtered light. I had fresh orange gerbera daisies blooming on Christmas day!!! The newer yellow daisy has not bloomed inside yet but I bet it will before too long. Theornage one put out blooms all last winter.

I also love Gerbera daisies but will rejoice at anything "pink". All the flowers in my yard are pink and my children are always on hand to keep up the tradition :) Pink flowers on the mantle always make me smile.
