One key factor in choosing the perfect gym for you is the right environment and atmosphere. Here are some key questions you want to ask yourself and the health-club staff when searching:
- How clean is the health club? Ask about daily cleaning regimens.
- When is the gym at its busiest? How available is the workout equipment during peak club hours?
- Is the gym a comfortable and motivating environment for you? It is key that you feel good about where you are working out.
- Are staff members knowledgeable and courteous?
- What do current members say about their experience?
- Is child care available? If so, you want to find out about the child-staff ratio. Observe the child-care operations and even speak with the child-care manager who can outline their procedures.
- Is it affiliated with area businesses? Does it offer any kind of corporate discount?
- Go online. Even though you've probably visited in person, check out its Web site again to make sure the club you're interested in has what you're looking for. Check out community sites to see what other people have to say. What is its standing or relationship with the Better Business Bureau or Right Choice Business?
- Does the gym have personal trainers? What are they like? Personality, experience and professionalism are the key ingredients to finding the perfect trainer.
- What kind of group fitness classes do they offer (for example, yoga, pilates, spin, aerobics)? How much do they cost? When are they offered?
- What will it cost? Be willing to invest in your monthly payment. This is your health and you get what you pay for. Always check into month-to-month or short-term agreements. It is OK to sign long-term agreements or pay up front, but always read the agreement carefully for detailed policies.
A third key step in choosing a health club is to know your health needs and outline your fitness goals.
- Talk with your doctor. Recent surgeries or major heath concerns should be evaluated by a health care professional.
- Many health clubs offer a complementary fitness evaluation with a certified personal trainer who can help you design a workout plan. Take advantage of this, especially if you aren't used to working out or if you are new to a gym. Just remember to be honest and specific about your goals.
- Carefully follow the instructions that have been set by the personal trainer. You will meet your goals faster and minimize any risk of injury.
