We had the big Lego KidsFest, an official touring event organized by Lego, come here earlier last year. But, local Lego lovers know that we've had other Lego events here in the Triangle too.

Among them is the BrickMagic Lego Festival, an independent event, sponsored by Lego, but organized by local Lego enthusiasts, including John Morrow, publisher of BrickJournal, the Raleigh-based international magazine for Lego fans.

This is a major Lego event which, by the way, also is more affordable for families to attend than the KidsFest was. Tickets are $11 in advance and $12 at the door for ages 17 and up; $7 in advance and $8 at the door for kids ages 4 to 16; and free for kids 3 and under.

Lego will be unveiling new sets at the event. Among the activities planned for the third annual BrickMagic Lego Festival are:

  • A visit from Certified Professional Lego builder Dan Parker. People can help him build a 5-foot-wide Deathstar. Parker also will create several other custom Star Wars sets, which will be auctioned off. Proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina.
  • A huge hall of custom Lego creations by top builders from around the country.
  • More than 20,000 loose Lego bricks to play with in a free build room.
  • A visit from professional minifigure customizer Jared K. Burks, who will hold free minifig workshops.
  • Workshops on building tips and techniques.
  • Screenings of Lego films
  • A robotics competition from First Lego League teams.

The event also includes an area to shop for hard-to-find Lego pieces, a space ship building contest with prices and much more.

BrickMagic is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 19, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 20, at the North Raleigh Hilton, 3415 Wake Forest Rd. Tickets are on sale now.
