The children's book staff at Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh offers up these fun or spooky Halloween book recommendations.
- "The Haunted House" by Giovanni Caviezel is a board book that welcomes little ones to a glittery, rhyming Halloween party with the friendliest ghosts and monsters you'll ever see. For ages 1 to 4. (Barron's, $6.99)
- "Scary, Scary Halloween" by Eve Bunting features early illustrations by Jan Brett. Mysterious eyes look over the strange assortment of creatures gathering for Halloween – but is everything as it first appears? Rhymes and lovely, sharp illustrations for ages 3 and up. (Clarion, $6.95)
- Ursula Vernon's Dragonbreath takes on a Halloween adventure in "No Such Thing As Ghosts." Danny and his friends have a Halloween like no other. You decide if Danny or Wendell save the day. For ages 8 and up. (Dial, $12.99)
- Jon Scieszka has assembled another stellar set of stories for "Guys Read: Thriller." M.T. Anderson, Bruce Hale, Anthony Horowitz, and more are included in this collection of scary stories geared to young guys. For ages 8 and up. (Walden Pond $6.99)
And congratulations to Quail Ridge for being named one of the country's greatest independent bookstores by Newsweek's Daily Beast this week! I love the great programs they offer and great recommendations they make when I'm looking for books for my own kids.
