Weekend Plans: Dino Days, Gooney Bird Greene, massive consignment sale, more

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2" opens in theaters at Marbles' IMAX Theatre on Friday. But if you want to see Part 1 before the big day, head over to Locally Grown in Chapel Hill for a free screening of the PG-13-rated movie and other activities. The movie starts around 8 p.m. Thursday on the Wallace Plaza, 150 E. Rosemary St.

It's time for Dino Days at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. This very popular event will celebrate the second anniversary of the museum's Dinosaur Trail and include all kinds of information and activities about dinosaurs. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. It's free with admission, which is $12.95 for adults; $10.95 for seniors and active military with ID; $9.95 for kids ages 3 to 12; and free for kids under age 3.

Raleigh Little Theatre's Teens on Stage opens its Gooney Bird Greene and Her True Life Adventures, adapted from the book "Gooney Bird Greene" by Lois Lowry. The show tells the story of the kids at Watertower Elementary School, who are having trouble concentrating. Then new student Gooney Bird Greene enters the scene, wearing pajamas and cowboy boots. The class is never the same again. Tickets are $13 for adults and teens and $9 for kids 12 and under. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, include afternoon and early evening shows on Saturday and Sunday, and continue through July 24. The Raleigh Little Theatre is on Pogue Street near Cameron Village.

It's time to shop! The massive Kids Exchange consignment sale at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh opens to the public this weekend. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday when some items are half off. You'll be able to find pretty much everything you need for your kids at this sale, which features more than 3,000 consignors. And it starts the official fall and winter consignment sale season. The Durham County Library will celebrate the midway point of its summer reading club with an "Are We There Yet?" Pit Stop Rally from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. There will be book giveaways, back-to-school supplies, Bull City Street Rodders, train rides, a moon bounce, face painting, balloon art, music, crafts, refreshments, games, live performances and special activities for tweens and teens.

At Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, a Garden Gourmet activity will focus on summer's freshest ingredients from farms across the state from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday. Project Dance with the American Dance Festival is a 45-minute African dance workshop from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Saturday. Both are free with admission, which is $5.

Speaking of fresh produce, Carrboro Farmers' Market's annual Tomato Day is 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. The market has more than 70 varieties of tomatoes. Market staff and volunteers will serve up sliced tomato samples starting at 8:30 a.m. (until supplies last). Pick up recipes and cooking tips and look for the big red tomato signs pointing to vendors selling tomatoes. Market purchases will earn customers raffle tickets for prizes to local shops and restaurants. There will be live music, face painting for kids and more.

And the Raleigh City Museum will present Fires, Fads and Fun: Raleigh During the Early 19th Century from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The downtown Raleigh museum will feature costumed living historians teaching dance and social etiquette and talking about life in the early 19th century. The program is free.
