The Great American Backyard Campout, a national effort that encourages parents and kids to explore their own backyard and camp out under the stars, is on June 25.
To celebrate, the Museum of Life and Science in Durham is offering an opportunity for the public to camp out at the museum. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. June 25 and wraps up at 8:30 a.m. June 26. Museum staffers will set up tents in the Catch the Wind exhibit. You'll cook hot dogs, roast marshmallows, learn about nocturnal animals and use telescopes to identify constellations.
REI is providing the camping equipment, so you don't need to worry about whether you have a tent. It's for camping pros or first-timers. To me, it sounds ideal for families who aren't sure if camping is for them, but are curious.
The fee is $15 per person and includes both food and the use of camping equipment. Reservations are required and space is limited. Call the museum at 919-220-5429, ext. 313, to reserve your spot.
