Justin Roberts rocks The ArtsCenter

Posted May 24, 2011

As I've written before, I'm a fan of Justin Roberts, the Grammy-nominated children's performer.

Saturday was the fourth time my older daughter and I have gone to one of his annual concerts at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. And we've never been disappointed. Justin Roberts performs at The ArtsCenter Justin Roberts rocks Carrboro

Just the music would be great. Roberts reaches back into his own childhood (with inspiration from his fans and others) to create some great lyrics that are all about being a kid and clever enough to appeal to parents. During his shows, Roberts and his Not Ready for Naptime Players mix in some fun banter and, on Saturday, even part of a Blondie song during his anthem to stay-at-home dads. It's a lot of fun.

Roberts took some time between his two shows on Saturday to talk about what he has in the works. The projects include a new children's book, to be published by Putnam Children's in fall 2012. It will likely be based on a song. "Sandcastle," about the death of a mother, or "Billy the Bully," about a bully, are in the running.

His fans will be happy to hear there's more music too - though no release date yet for the two CDs he's working on.

Check out Roberts' website for more about his music. And watch the video on Roberts, which includes my interview with him and some clips of the concert on Saturday.

(And thanks to Brooke Kesterson of The ArtsCenter for serving as camerawoman. Brooke puts on some great programs for kids as its children's programming director).
