State history museum needs your vote in contest for $50,000

The N.C. Museum of History is a contender in a national contest to win a $50,000 grant to build a hands-on discovery gallery for kids.

The Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away more than $1 million to 60 ideas that "move communities forward." Only 10 grants will be awarded in the $50,000 category.

The hands-on gallery at the downtown Raleigh museum would inspire kids (and adults) to explore history. It would be an important addition to the Tar Heel Junior Historian Association, which encourages the study of state and local history and is based in clubs at schools and communities across the state. The association is geared toward kids in grades four through twelve.

Right now, the museum has no state funding for new exhibits.

Voting runs through May 31. You can vote every day between now and then. There are several ways to vote for the project. Here's how to do it:

You can also send more votes through Power Votes. Look for a unique 10-character alphanumeric code on specially marked Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Pepsi Max products in participating locations. Enter that code on the Power Vote page at www.refresheverything.com to find out how much your Power Vote code is worth: 5, 10, 15, 25, 50 or 100 votes.

And the history museum project isn't the only North Carolina project in the running. Click here to find a Facebook page with details about more of them, including several at local schools.

History isn't just about dates and facts--it's learning how the decisions, challenges, accomplishments, etc. of past people have shaped OUR world. THJHA connects students with community and identity, and it teaches critical thinking, the ability to evaluate information, leadership, citizenship ... This is more important than ever. The NC Museum of History gallery project will impact thousands of young people (and adults) for years. Please vote today!

As agoodman said, Cat Angels Pet Adoptions is going for a 50k refresh grant to replace our shelter. Our lease is up at the end of the year and our landlord needs the space to expand his business, so it won't be renewed. We understand that as we need to expand too!

We are currently the top ranked animal idea in the $50K tier, but at #14 we need more help to get over the top! Our voting page is http://www.refresheverything.com/catangels and our text code is 106148.

There are 10 awards in each tier, so you can vote for us along with the museum and other local ideas and we can all win! You can vote for 5 ideas a day and we're voting for other local ideas as well.

Thanks!

Thanks everybody for sharing these other projects! Please add more if you know of them. Good luck to all!

Sarah

Thanks for letting folks know about Pepsi Refresh. There are 3 High School bands vying to win the Pepsi Refresh project, Wakefield HS, Broughton, and West Rowan. Music education is severely underfunded and most programs require heavy participation fees and non-stop fundraising. Marching Band provides kids with an identity in High School and emphasizes responsibility, commitment and leadership skills. Band kids perform at the top tier academically. Thanks for supporting their efforts. Text 105925, and 106308 and 105973 all to 73774 .

Please help Cat Angels Pet Adoptions in Cary win a Pepsi grant so they can move into a new shelter space (they are being kicked out of theirs in December 2011).

Text 106148 to 73774 or vote online at www.refresheverything.com/catangels or register with Pepsi Points.

Please help G.C. Hawley Middle School in Creedmoor, NC win a $25,000 grant from Pepsi.

The grant will allow Hawley to purchase 30 science tables and 60 chairs to outfit 2 science classrooms and $7000 worth of science equipment for the entire school.

Go to http://www.refresheverything.com/gchawleyscience and you can vote for the grant. You can vote once per day online and also via text by texting "106053" to the #73774.

The contest goes on until 11:59pm on May 31st, and the top 15 grants in the $25,000 grant range will win. The more votes Hawley has, the better Hawley's chance of winning.

Please take the time to vote (at least once, and if you can everyday that would be WONDERFUL!) and help Hawley Middle School win!
