Here's something for fans of Louis Sachar's Wayside School series ...
The Raleigh Little Theatre's production of "Sideways Stories from Wayside School" opens this weekend. The show is based on the book series, which is very popular with kids in the elementary school grades. (I'm told you don't need to be a fan of the series to enjoy the production).
The story is all about Wayside School, a school of 30 classrooms built one on top of each other (except for the 19th floor which seems to have been forgotten, though there may or may not be a Miss Zarves living there). It follows the students and teachers and the adventures they go on. There's Ms. Jewls' possessed blackboard, pigtails that talk, a principal who steals lunch money and more.
The cast includes local students along with more seasoned performers. The Raleigh Little Theatre is one of the oldest continuously operating community theaters in the country.
The show is recommended for kids five and up. The production relies on the use of sound such as organ music and thunder and lightning along with bold lighting. And the subject matter could be a little frightening to younger kids. So parental discretion advised ...
"Sideways Stories" opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday and continues until May 22 with shows Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. There are a couple morning shows on Thursdays, but they are nearly sold out (if not sold out already).

There's a lot happening in and around the Raleigh Little Theatre this weekend in addition to the show. The theater sits next to the Raleigh Rose Garden, which is in full bloom now.
