Posted April 16, 2011

Just a quick note to mention that the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh is holding a couple of events for teens.

Here are the details:

  • Annual Art Competition for kids in grades 9 to 12. Teens are invited to create original art inspired by an work in the museum's collection. Students should use the museum’s collection as inspiration for a work of their own rather than try to copy a particular piece. Works can be in any medium. Prizes of $200, $100, and $50 will be awarded, and selected works will be exhibited in the Museum’s GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Gallery. Deadline for entries is May 6. Click here for the entry form (it's a PDF).
  • Slam Lite, a poetry slam workshop for kids ages 11 to 18 is from 11 a.m. to noon April 30. In recognition of National Poetry Month, the museum will host its first spoken word workshop. Poet, playwright, and emcee Dasan Ahanu will be there to teach the basics of spoken word. Kids should bring their own poems or craft one on the spot. Stay to watch other poets perform during the afternoon Invitational Poetry Slam at 2 p.m. Space is limited. Registration is required. Call Kristin Smith at 919-664-6850 for details.

The museum also is gearing up for its spring and summer programming, including Wednesday afternoon performances, Preschool Playshops and Family Fun Saturdays. So check the museum's website and stay tuned for more.
