Lynda Loveland: Pocket pets

When my son was born, I thought this would be quite the learning experience. Maybe I’d get some insight into the species they call “man."

It’s been six years, and I still don’t get it.

Let me explain.

The other day, I went outside to go check on Caiden, who was playing quietly. Yep, that was a red flag already.

I came around the corner of the house and saw him stuffing something in his pocket. I got closer and noticed that “something” was squirming.

That “something” was a big pile of worms!!! I said, “Caiden, what in the world are you doing?” He answered very simply, “I’m putting them in my pocket.” I asked why. He very matter of factly said, “because I don’t have anything else to put them in.” How stupid was I? (Sarcastic font there.)

I quickly fetched a bucket as he pulled out about two dozen worms out of his pocket.

I always heard on TV or read in books about boys putting live things in their pockets, but I never thought it was REAL! How long was he going to keep them there? What if he forgot about them? How would that feel? He was wearing shorts at the time. Ewwwwww!

Come to think of it. I didn’t check to make sure he got all of them out.

Gotta go.

Elliesmom - thanks for the warning! :)

I once picked up her coat and it weighed 10 pounds more than it should due to all the rocks.

JAT--we went through the rock phase also! For every pocket, my daughter had at least one rock. I don't know where she found them all! Even after checking, some made it to the washing machine. Now she's 10 and wants purple hair. I miss the rock days :-)

When my daughter was around 3, we got a pet fish. We went to feed it one day and as I was looking for it among the plastic plants in the aquarium, I said out loud, "where's the fish." I didn't expect my daughter to respond, "In my pocket."

So I guess it's not always the boys.

My child likes to keep rocks. So now our washer has a nice little collection of clean, and now tumbled, rocks in it!

The thought of those worms going through the washing machine is what gets me... EW!!! I like worms, and I love scientific exploration, but worms in your pocket- not so much!

Well just make sure you show him the difference between a baby worm and baby snake.. That is having fun and enjoying real play time verses being on the computer or playing DS etc.. Priceless... Check your washing machine and clothes basket for worms...
