Baby Steps: Pleasantly surprised

The road to parenthood – particularly for my husband and I – is long and sometimes treacherous. And we are still unsure where it leads.

That’s why little highlights along the way are so important to us. We revel in them to stay positive and this past week we had a great example of a small victory.

We still have time before we make any hard and fast decisions. I won’t walk for graduation for another four weeks, which is our benchmark to reach before we move forward with in vitro or adoption. In those weeks, we are continuing to do our research about which options will work best for us.

I had a couple of questions I wanted to specifically address to the doctor we consulted with about IVF this week so I called the office and – after listening to a plethora of options – I left a message on the nurse’s line. Even though I specifically asked for the doc, I thoroughly expected to get a call back from a nurse. I know the doctors are busy and have a lot more to worry about than one couple who hasn’t even committed to a treatment. But I was wrong…

Within a couple hours I had – get this – an email from the doctor! He mentioned he was headed into the OR and couldn’t call today but suggested we set up a phone appointment. I was thoroughly shocked that he was so willing to communicate directly with me and even give up his direct email (does he realize what he’s done?).

The whole thing was such a pleasant surprise. I’m feeling better about this process more and, after two years of trying to get pregnant, I’m excited to continue our progress.
