Amanda Lamb: You can't judge a cover

I am constantly amazed at the wisdom my girls impart to me that has nothing to do with anything I've taught them. In fact, they are constantly teaching me things.

The other day I was driving with my 7-year-old and we were inexplicably talking about who she might marry when she grows up. It's a game we have always played - talking about the future, what she wants to be (an artist), where she wants to live (next door to me), how many children she will have (two). She is very coy when we talk about specific boys, refusing to acknowledge that boys she knows are cute. On this day she finally stopped me in my tracks.

"Mommy, I'm not looking for a cute husband, I'm looking for a nice husband," she said with authority as if she had been mulling this issue over for quite some time.

"Wow, where did you get that from?" I asked her with a stunned expression in the rearview mirror.

"I just know it. No one had to tell me," she replied with confidence as she crossed her arms across her chest and tilted her little head.

"You are very smart, young lady," I shook my head and grinned.

"Mommy, everyone knows you can't judge a cover by its book, right?"

I almost had to pull the car over, I was laughing so hard. I started to correct her, and then decided against it. "That's right, honey. You are right on the money."
