Kidzu Children's Museum celebrates fifth anniversary Sunday

Posted March 4, 2011

Kidzu Children's Museum in Chapel Hill will have cake and special activities Sunday afternoon to celebrate its fifth anniversary.

From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Kidzu will offer active games such as hopscotch, bean bag toss, Twister and more. From 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., families can enter to win some prizes. You must be present at the 4:30 p.m. drawing to win. Also at 4 p.m., there will be some birthday cake (while it lasts).

The event and admission to the museum is free for the celebration as it is every Sunday at Kidzu thanks to a grant from Durham Regional Hospital.

Since Kidzu opened in March 2006, the museum has served more than 150,000 visitors and opened its own original exhibit called "KidZoom." The museum offers a variety of regular and special events including storytelling, art, crafts, science, cooking and music programs. Its exhibits and programs are geared toward kids ages 0 to 8.

Kidzu often works with local artists and institutions on some of their special programming for kids. And I'm always amazed by some of the opportunities here. They are definitely worth checking out, especially if you're in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area. Here are a couple of examples of upcoming events:

  • Traditions in Clay with Ackland Art Museum from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 10. Kids ages 4 to 8 will look at objects that are part of Ackland's Tradition in Clay exhibit and then make their own vessels at Kidzu.
  • Storymakers in collaboration with FRANK, a Chapel Hill art gallery, 4 p.m.to 5:30 p.m., March 24. Tour FRANK's Storymakers Exhibition where kids ages 4 and up can learn about storytelling through art and talk to Sudie Rakusin, a local artist and children's book author and illustrator. Then the kids will travel back to Kidzu where, with the help of Rakusin, they'll create their own story using mixed media and imagination. It's $12 per child.

Pre-registration is required for both programs. Call Kidzu at 919-933-1455 to register.

Museum leaders currently are working to raise money for a major expansion to the nearby rooftop of the Wallace Parking Deck. They hope to open in the expanded space in 2014.

Happy birthday Kidzu!
