Wake County library system's annual book sale will be more than just a sale this year.
Organizers have moved the more than two-decade-old sale to the N.C. State Fairgrounds and added music, crafts for kids and other activities. The sale runs next week (note: date updated) at the fairgrounds' Exposition Center.
"It's a fun community event," said Dale Cousins, a district library manager who is working on the sale. "It's a great recycling effort. And it's another way to celebrate books and reading."
Over the years, the sale has moved to different locations across the county, often filling empty stores that required organizers to make improvements to each of the spaces. This year, the library was able to secure a space at the fairgrounds. No improvements to the space were needed. Organizers were able to focus their attentions on the event itself.
Cousins said they hope the festival portion of the annual book sale will become a yearly event too.
The sale still will feature thousands of books for sale - more than 450,000 of them this year. The books, some used and some new, are just $4 for hardbound books and media and $2 for paperbacks and children's materials on Thursday and Friday. The price is cut in half on Saturday. Sunday is bargain day when a box of books is $5 and a bag of books is $2. The library provides the bag and books.
New this year is the live music both Friday and Saturday, along with other special activities on Saturday. They include the Sandbox Kids and Family Band from 10 a.m. to noon; the N.C. Symphony's instrument petting zoo where kids can check out instruments from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; a juggler and stilt walker; and more. You'll find drop-in crafts for kids, games with prizes, face painting, balloon art, magic, book characters in costume and other activities. Admission is free.
The sale, a fundraiser for the library system, runs 5 p.m.to 9 p.m. Feb. 17; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 18 and Feb. 19; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 20.
